You can buy Acetone at any hardware store. I get mine at Walmart. I use 12cc and you inject in the chest cavity. Either from the broadside or from the front where the neck meets the chest. I use the 20cc syringe and 1" 16ga needle.

And what percentage of the time does the skunk still get off a spray with an outfit like this?

Out of all the skunks I've dispatched using this method only one sprayed and it was my fault for being in a hurry. I've used this method since 1977 and have tangled with some pretty aggressive skunks since that time. You just have to go slow and easy. Some skunks may take up to 15-20 minutes to get the needle in them.

That skunk dispatch system came from Wisconsin. The "skunk" man came to our conventions in Michigan a number of times since 1979.
I've used it for awhile, and never have had a problem. Works well if your wanting to extract the essence for lure.
Skunks taken in the fall need at least 10cc of Acetone. In the spring you usually don't need quite as much, maybe 5-6. Less fat to course through. Sometimes you may only get them through the upper back area. Then wait.

so how bad do they smell if they dont spray?

So basically it sounds like if you can keep the skunk calm and relaxed and you're successful in injecting the acetone in him, then it's a done deal he WON'T spray?

skunk poles were invented by god because I use mine religiously and I am yet to have ine spray when i inject it. another piece of advice is that if you have more than one person at the catch they should both be talking nice. when you go to inject just try to get the acetone in the lungs i am quickly becoming a fan of injecting on the top of the back wich also helps to keep them from arching and let their head do 3 bobs and pull the siringe out and go put it away and go collect the skunk, skin, flesh, strech and sell

I used a skunk pole daily for about 5 years doing nuisance work. Mine was a little more elaborate,but the principal was the same. Also used di-methyl-ketone,sold as "Nighty nite" in the ADC catalogs instead of acetone. Think I did close to 1500 skunks in those 5 years. That's including litters. Usually in cage traps, often in window wells, crawl spaces, etc. Only got sprayed twice. Since I've given ADC work up, and trap for myself now, I've made a pole from PVC, and found that the acetone works just as well as di-methyl ketone, lots cheaper too. As for smell if they don't spray, you'll still know it's a skunk, but just barely. They're easy to skin,and flesh. In my opinion,one of the most underrated furs on the market. Shiny sleek ,soft underfur. I put up every nice one I get.
