I had to shorten it and take out some explainations of the use of the pole and how to use it

Youtube has a 10 minute maximum

I have seen a lot that use this device to hold the cable tight while noosing the critter.

Excellent tutorial! Very informative an helpful.

Good video Geezerman, I make mine the same except I use another ferrel and make a loop on the handle end too! I also glued my caps but I like your way better for cable replacement!!

Ohio Andy, thanks for that link

I made a lock devise, just don't really use a lock , normally I only use it when releasing an animal or like the other day capturing a mother coon in a soffit

No problem Geezerman.

I personally like the piece of mind knowing the cable is locked in place until i release it. I made one very much like yours and have now switched it over to a positive lock. To each their own and yours suits your needs. Until i used one, I really don't have a good handle on what my needs really were.

I put a small engine pull handle on the end of the cable on mine as well.

I have a question, why do you prefer a PVC tube instead aluminum, copper or iron? I think PVC breaks with low temperatures.

The primary reasons are: cost, easy to work with, less binding through the caps, light and the pvc is strong enough to get the job done. The only complaints I have heard are from the northernmost states as you indicate. Great video Geezerman.

what is the reasons you would need a catch pole on your trap line other than releasing non target animals?

Many use it to dispatch animals. Cats in particular.

Nice video.

You didn't really hammer on the kitchen table, though, did you? smile

Tony, Check my link out. Here are some pics of a line tightener available at most hardware stores (Ace, True Value and Do-it Best Centers):

The ball bearings lock against the cable:

The t-shaped end is spring loaded to hold pressure on the ball bearings:

and the stepped cone end will fit down into several diameter pipes (3/4" - 1" maybe):

From the link you can see they are less than $3 a piece. Sorry for the blurry cell phone pics.

I thought there had to be something else to the story, but you had it covered with some sort of table cloth, so wasn't sure.... smile

I had to chuckle, as it was something I would do.

Some wd-40 or spray silicone will take care of sticky locks, ive used mine for 5+ years no problems.Never broke one either. If coon is caught by back foot, put noose around neck, stretch coon out and stand on his chest, they die in under 2 minutes. If he is caught by front feet, noose him,pin his head down, grab his back feet, then stand on his chest.Put as much weight as u can on his chest.U have to be careful, coon are tough and THEY DO BITE.Wear good thick leather gloves and be careful.Dont recommend inexperienced trappers try this till u get some experience handling animals.I catch 50+ coon a year and have not shot one for some time.I like to put both my holes in the end of pvc cap,but does it make a difference.Same for fox or coyote.
