I got a few drags a few weeks ago for coyote and was wondering how you guys like to set them up. I plan to run 10 ft of chain on the drag itself.

What kind of chain? ie twin loop, machine link

Any swivels on the drag chain?

I got a few #2 dukes that I might use on these drags in case of theft that I havent gotten around to to center swivel; would it matter if i left the chain on the side with the drags for coyote?

Thanks

Here's how I do it. This rig has been criticized for the brass mid-chain swivel and not having the s-hooks welded shut. Good points indeed. I have my traps rigged this way and don't have a welder and I don't want to say any more about why I haven't made those suggested changes so as not to jink myself. Hopefully, I make them next year. I check early. It works.

Consequently, the catalog I bought the brass swivels from calls them "Brass Coyote Swivels"...maybe the picture makes them look ligher duty than they are. I have had, a non-target bear, stretch one out, but it was one of the j-hooks that came on the trap that opened up. They could easily be replaced with a HD multi-purpose swivel.

Actually I was thinking about a swivel at the end of teh drag to keep it flat on the ground and not being rolled by the chain.

BBB that drag isnt gonna lay flat no matter what .... lol .... it will be doin a lil jig when being dragged around by the yotes .... BUT .... the long chains and weight of them as well as the drag itself should keep it on the ground .... and leave a good trail (in most conditions) and tangle fairly quickly (in most conditions) .... i dont have any swivels at all on my drag systems .... just the swivel at the trap frame ... double swivel mid-chain, and swivel at the end of the trapchain .... drags are attached when needed

I quit using the small drags like the one pictured over twenty years ago because I lost some after the drag got hooked around the chain backwards. If I was going to use them like this, I'd run my drag through a piece of pipe like the one in this picture, and always use plenty of chain, which you said you;d use ten feet. that's good, and as I've said before. I'm not going to knock anyones methods, as everything is different around the country. With the rains we have down here, I'm just not comfortable without some weight on the drag. I don't put swivels on the chains either, unless I;m just attatching two shorter chains together to make a drag sized one. All of my swivels go on the trap chain. I use S hooks to attatch the chains to the trap and drag ends. This way if someone wants to remove my traps without my permission, they have to have some tools with them, or carry out the whole works.

I also would like a little heavier drag than the top one if targeting coyotes....also i add a "tit" on the downside of each side of the drag to leave a better "drag" mark to track...

Txcatman great point a couple of drop tines, one each direction, so no matter how the drag runs its always plowing dirt! 3lbs a drag for yotes! I hate searching! Now You just follow the deadfrough. Much easier!

I just use twist link chain(2/0)..I use around 7' total which is plenty around here. I like a heavy drag. I never carried them so weight wasnt a concern.

I also made my own JC Coneer style drags to use. I could make my own to suit myself and a lot cheaper besides.

Mines set up the same way only using a real drag like those on the back a KY's bench.prob not carry to many at a time there chunky.10 ft a chain or even 1/8th or 1/4 in cable works .On that type drag i added 2 ft a small log chain to them made them hook up quicker. (Camera dyed the other day ) RayA

the conners type like is shown in the picture is prety decent, ten foot of chain and well swivel3d near the trap, i like the 3 pound ones, 2 is fine most of the time, if ya really want a drag to work hard put something long and heavy midchain, like a one inch chunk of rebar 2 foot long, texas style in other words, now mater how much he jumps its always pulling back then, and the hook leaves great marks.

none

I've never had a coyote go more than 35 yards or so. The one that went 35 went about 25 yards straight down a hard gravel road. I could see where a heavier drag may be better and make the occasional tracking job even less occasional.

I didn't have all this wonderful advice on hand 4 years ago when I started trapping coyotes. I found T-man last summer. But, when the MTP catalog says 3/8 coyote drags...that's what I buy for coyote drags.

They work. The tines protrude in different directions and they make marks as they go. Other than the bear (I mentioned above), I haven't lost anything yet....oh, great, I just fell into a trap!

KYBOY - Them drags look like they could anchor a large boat!

I have used railroad track plates. The cool thing about them is when you are preseason scouting you can drop them off at set sites! They rust so they blend in well. And you can leave them from one year to the next. NOBODY is going to steal them! So-what if they do ther FREE!!
