Kasey,

While I am comfortable with computers, ipad and smart phone (in my case iphone), I am by no means a genius
with them.

That said, I've used both square and paypal on our phone and ipad with no hitches. They are simple and easy
to use and are good to have on hand, even if so many pay by check or cash. The option means it is an option
for them.

We run our company on the square program, you can setup (as I'm sure you can with most) various categories
for example; inspection = $X.00 or Squirrel Program = $X.00 in the phone so that if you have certain fixed costs
that you usually charge you can quickly pick that as an "item" and charge them.

I'll list out how simple this really is.

1) Sign up for square account on their website (you will enter a bank account so they can send you money electronically)

2) You receive 1 or more (if you ask for them) little white swiper devices that allow the cards to be swiped.

3) When you have a client you login, just like you do for email or anything else with a password/username

4) You enter the amount manually or by choosing an item as described above, which then waits for you to "charge"

5) You swipe their credit card and it transmits data including your location (their house / another verifier that you are
charging them and they authorized it)

6) You see a popup screen waiting for their signature.

7) They can sign with their finger, or you can get a rubber tipped stylus (the better way)

8) You can email them or text them a receipt

9) Thats it, your cash will be wired, minus the 2.75% within 2 days max (in my experience)

No fuss no muss, works great.

We used the paypal one recently for the non profit booth we've been running, same thing
worked great and works the same, just plugs into your headphone jack on your smart phone.

Hope that helps,

Justin

Square is very simple.

Punch in amount owed, swipe card, customer signs screen with their finger, DONE!!! Three days later you have money in your bank account.

I guess Paypal is now doing it also but don't know how their rates compare.

If you do higher volume, heartland payment systems is more economical than square or paypal. They are working on some new reporting that is better for a service business vs a restaurant. The CEO has been very responsive...

Thanks for the info. Justin. Been looking at this for the last couple of weeks. I don't/won't pay for a smart phone and operate off a laptop and was wondering what options were available. The laptop died a day or so ago and this gives me the chance/excuse to upgrade to an IPad mini.

Now I'm jealous Mike! Even though we have an ipad, apple makes me want the mini!

Thanks Justin! I have a I phone, no computer!
I think I will download it and get it going!

Question, do I have to have good reception to
Make the transaction? I work In a very rural vacation
Area and don't always have the best reception!

Yes Kasey reception is important.

I found if I have less than 2 bars it won't process. What I do in those situations is write down the card #, exp. date, 3 digit pin, and billing zip

and then run it when I get to a better reception area. You pay higher fee if you type in the numbers vs. swipe but sometimes you just don't have a choice.

Here's one of several threads about using squareup.

http://www.trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3084685/Re_credit_cards#Post3084685

This thread is a year old and there are many new players in the mobile credit card processing market. I don't think you could go wrong with Squareup or PayPal's system as it very competitive on pricing and comes with real customer support. It also has the ability to scan checks for immediate deposit to your PayPal account. I have been using Square for a year and have had no issues and deposits have been made promptly. Recent bank transfers from PayPal have only taken two days (like Square) so I have been considering crossing over to PayPal for e-voicing and mobile processing. Some folks may even benefit from PayPal's virtual terminal as well.

Kasey, As Nate said, you do need reception and if you don't have it here is the info for manual -

Manually-entered cards cost just 3.5% + 15¢ per transaction.

That is from their website.

Most of my cc folks are city/metro so I've only run into the reception issue in the basement of a commercial building
which was easily solved by going outside upstairs, but in the rural countryside you might be doing more manual actions.
