Just a heads up. Yellow Jackets are starting to bust through the walls here in SE Michigan. I'm getting a couple calls a day about it. Some of the customers don't realize what it is and think it's mice or bats tapping on the wall.

Had a lady call and tell me that she saw a big bubble in her paint and heard finger nails tapping the wall. Her husband decided to poke his finger through the paint bubble and SUPRISE!

What ever you do, don't poke your finger through the wall. They really hate that.

What is it about this site? Every time somebody posts something, I can guarantee you that within a very short time it will happen to us. My wife told me to take one of our shopvacs over to Mike, one of our technicians. A lady just poked a hole in her wall, letting a couple of hundred yellow jackets invade her kitchen.

Unfortunately, she got stung, blew up like a balloon, and is in the hospital. I just got back but I imagine by now that Mike has a shopvac full of stinging insects. ( And yes, both the outside of the apartment and the inside, were covered with the bodies of the newly departed ) Mike is our "Go to insect guy ".

Man, I hope I didn't curse her. I can set my calender by it every year, although it seems to be a little late this year. I hope she's OK.

I like to use a vacume that has reverse/blower. You can play some really good practical jokes with a vacume full of angry yellow jackets.

I guess she's okay, Joe. She came back from the hospital about the same time my son pulled up. He said her arm was pretty swollen.

I love that reverse blower idea. What a great way to collect some unpaid bills in a hurry!

Anyone ever try using those fake wasp nests as a deterrent. They are territorial. I had a nest of them under my RV in the back yard. I discovered it when my grand daughter got stung. I couldn't get under it to spray the nest, so I hung up one of those fake nests off the back bumper, 3 days later they were gone.

My observation for this year is almost no honey bees, very few hornets but OH man the wasps. I was stung four times last week and have removed close to a dozen nests in my yard and house. the biggest one was in the stove vent pipe, we kept getting a wasp or two everyday in the kitchen, finally looked on the roof and sure enough they were working the hood. I had to do removal and exclusion on my own house. The fee was very reasonable.

I did a related podcast with Warrior and Rob Overton that is very related to this discussion.

The Wasp Warrior and Stinging Insect Removal

If you ever thought about adding a new service to your business this might be your next money maker. You may not need a pest control license in your state. Check local laws. This podcast is all about offering services for Honeybees, Africanized Bees, Wasps and Hornets David Mcleod will be discussing a new green method of his to remove yellow jackets, hornets, wasps and africanized bee removals. Rob Overton who designed and introduced the Beevac will also be part of our panel of experts on mechanical methods vs using pesticides for stinging insect control.

If you are using a bee-vac for wasps of any type just take a piece of 1/4" hardware cloth and build a little cage over the intake piece of the vacuum (inside the shop-vac or bee-vac). This will destroy them as they go into the container of whatever you prefer.

The Wasp Warrior In A Kilt

The college art student we hired last summer loved the whole idea of David Mcleod "warrior" removing bees & wasps in a kilt.Don't try this at home without a bee suit. Kilt optional.

You want to run them through a very blunt screened object at a very extreme high rate of speed.

Warrior talks about his development of his wasp killing vacs and how he reverse engineeered Rob Overton's gentle Bee hive removal System .

The best visual image I can give anyone is you want to end up with dead wasp exoskeletons in pieces on the other end. The last thing you want to do is pizz off yellow jackets and not kill them.

Warrior told me wasp removal is something he fell right into. People do not know the difference between a Bee and Wasp and if you pre sell a bee removal job 80 miles away you need to get paid for the removal wasp , bee or otherwise. Warrior had himself a full hive in one of Rob Overton's bee vacuum systems. It took Warrior getting stuck with live wasps into developing a out of the box, ready to use wasp killing system . Anyways at some point warrior will chime in if you don't catch the podcast.

When warrior first described it to me it reminded me of "MR BONE STRIPPER" on a 1991 Movie Comedy Classic "Nothing But Trouble" With John Candy, Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd and Demi Moore. If you watch the movie you will get the idea of how a wasp killing system should really work.

If you want to get rid of then quick - use Sevin powder in a hand duster. Just give their entrances and surrounding area a good dusting. Usually don't see much activity the next day.

I don't like to use any pesticides especially Sevin dust. It has been proven through studies that it is in fact carried back to honeybee hives. The University Of Georgia has done some studies on bees wax and found it and several other pesticides that homeowners use on their properties. In any case it is not surprising when I get a yellow jacket call and find out that they are in walls after ALL OF THIS STINKING RAIN that we are getting in Georgia. I guess that they have no where to nest in the ground...Please try not to use any pesticides if you don't have to
