Is this a vole or a shrew?

Shrews are smaller than mouse and voles are a little larger. ( I don't need no stinkin picture )

Just look at the teeth, voles are rodents and with have the yellow incisors characteristic of rodents. Shrews are not rodents and lack the large gnawing incisors and just have small pointed teeth for eating invertebrates and such. Definitely other differences, but this is one very clear distinction you can use.

Thanks for the stinkin pictures Mike. Good comparison. I always wanted a shirt or coat made from shrew skin but my bride was always a

little hesitant about sewing 14 or 15 thousand hides together.

+1 on the coat idea. In addition to being very soft, shrew fur is waterproof. A swimming shrew floats higher than a cork bobber. Would make a great coat if only they weren't so small.
