When I'm trapping my little creek back home, the water is rarely threatening my hip boots. I have drowned beaver everytime on my #3 Bridgers and MB 750's. I consider this a shallow creek. What depth is yours?

Would it be possible to get them in a snare and have them get tangled up so it chokes them out? I have had beavers pull the weight up on a drowner (I didn't put enough rocks in the bag) and they were still there when I got there so I would think you would be ok with a 650 or a 750. I would make sure there are plenty of swivels in the chain, but I would set it if I had the option.

In the Teachers Of the Night series, they would use a long chain (15-feet I think) staked off and an MB750 on the end. Beaver didn't pull out and I believe it was too much weight for him to tote around too much keeping him settled.

Thanks Rye, I was thinking that I was crazy or something having read awhile ago about someone who long-chained their beaver traps. I didn't think I was losing it...

Thats a good idea Rye, I will have to file that one away for later!! I never really thought about that but it makes sense. What if you attached a small weight on the chain near the trap, so it had to drag that around too? It might tire them out a little bit faster.

I'm not suggesting this but it's just another way people do things: I was talking to my high school science teacher one day about trapping and he was telling me that they used to weld weights on the bottoms of their traps for beaver, have a longer-than-normal chain and every beaver they trapped was drowned in the water. I think the weight idea is good, just the welding the trap to it... hmmm. how about a cement-filled bean can or similar s hooked to the trap chain maybe a foot from the trap?

Yeah thats what I was thinking too, the only problem I could see is the weight might get hung up on something. If you were to weld a half inch slab of steel to the base of the trap I bet it would work better than something on the chain, because as soon as it hit the water it would sink like a rock.

Ok, I see where you're going now. Would it be worth it though to weld such a contraption to a nice versatile trap? Maybe do a few and just test them... I know I'd have a hard time striking an arc to such a thing of beauty as a MB750...LOL

I would either long chain to a solid stake or drown with weights, not attempt both at the same time. Thats just me though. Typically if I have the depth I drown them. If not, I snare them and dispatch when I arrive in the morning.

to drown you'll need between 30 and 40lbs in my experience. anything less adn they'll drag it around and you have to go find your trap and beaver. Not fun in dark water.

Thats true JBotto, I would probably have a hard time welding metal onto a 750....haha. Luckily all my beaver legholds are bridger #3's, so the investment is a lot less. Is there any way you could drill maybe 2 holes in the base and bolt a slab onto it?? That way you could take it off if you wanted. One hole might work just as good too. All you would need is something to hold the weight on.

Ahh, the Bridger #3...Even to me they are precious metal! Love those things! If I ever run into a situation where I can't use drowners, I use my 330's...Don't know what else to say!

I would use as heavy a trap as I could in this situation. There is little chance of you drowning anything in that kind of water, unless you want to get the shovel out and start digging....

I dont think I would try to drown a beaver there. You need at least 2 feet min and a live beaver will not be in the trap when you get there.Get 1 or 2 330's it the onlw way to go.

I have made castor sets with just a stick. It doesnt seem to bother the beaver at all, I think the scent has more to do with it than anything. I can post a picture if you want.

Its just that they are so hard to hold when they are caught by a front foot most will not be there when you return.

I stake them in with finned superstakes and set a MB 750 laminated. Hit the back foot and they'll be there with a spectacular catch circle. Get a front foot and you'll have a drumstick...so rear foot is critical. Messed with the chains and it just isn't worth it IMO. Doing as I've stated..held up to 70 pounders on a 2 day check.

this is the only pic I have of my beaver sets, but most are made the same way. the trap is on a drowner.

you can just see the castor on the stick right in front of the rock.

you could also put a 330 in there instead and block it off some more, I think that would work.
