paragraph.)
A Vashon Island eco-saboteur who previously lost an arm cutting power
to Orcas Island is facing sex crime charges.
In charging documents filed Wednesday, King County prosecutors contend
Gabrial T. Mondragon attempted to solicit sex from a 13-year-old girl
outside a Vashon Island movie theater.
Now charged with a single count of indecent liberties, Mondragon, 28,
was sentenced to probation in 2008 after losing his right hand and
lower arm while attempting to cut a large electrical cable on Orcas
Island to protest the death of Luna -- an celebrated orca killed after
colliding with a tugboat propeller -- and deforestation.
In that 2008 case, Mondragon jolted himself after attempting to cut
through the substation cable with a power saw. He'd attempted to
protect himself from the 69,000-volt line, according to court
documents, by donning two pairs of dishwashing gloves.
This guy must be granted a Darwinian award for trying so hard to remove himself from the gene pool although he failed to complete the job and is only missing body parts............He sure is stupid. Mondragon pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of destruction of
government property. About 4,000 Orcas Power and Light customers lost
electricity for about four hours.
The New Mexico native had arrived at Vashon Island several years
before after involving himself in environmental activities in several
states. Mondragon, according to court documents, spent more than a
year living in a redwood cedar tree, then moved to a Port Angeles
commune for some time.
On Aug. 26, 2009, prosecutors contend Mondragon approached a group of
girls -- two 12-year-olds and one 13-year-old -- he'd previously met
at events on Vashon Island.
The girls told police they were "creeped out" when Mondragon told one
of the girl's she was "hot" and attempted to walk away. As they did
so, Mondragon is alleged to have propositioned one of the girls,
asking if she would perform oral sex on him in an alley.
Investigators contend the girls walked into the theater to wait for
Mondragon to leave. The girl whom Mondragon is alleged to have
propositioned then told her mother of the incident.
"(The girl's mother) said she found out this was not an isolated
incident, and there have been several girls at McMurray Middle School
… that have either experienced or witnessed similar contacts with the
defendant," King County Sheriff's Detective Michael Gordon said in
court documents.
Gordon noted that another girl's mother told him Mondragon is a local
artist specializing in paintings of naked, dead girls.
"While it's not a crime to express one's self in art such as this,
considering his predilection with sexual activity, particularly with
young, underage girls, it raises concerns," the detective continued in
the March 24 affidavit.
Prosecutors have charged Mondragon with a single count of indecent
liberties. He has not been jailed in the case, but has been ordered
not to have contact with minors.
