Pro's & Cons on Beaver Hoops. I admit I bought some thinking according to the advertisement they just clipped on? No They Don't,,,, Well they have Hog Rings that need to be attached. Is it a pain to use the Hoops with the Hog Rings? Did I make a mistake. Thumb

Been using hoops for some time. I use a leather hole punch to go around the hide and punch the holes, then just slip on the hog ring. Saves on my fingers. I may use to many rings, but I like how it turns out.

Thats a good looking Bev bob56!!!!

Thumbcatcher, I normally board beaver but I have a couple hoops to use if I have fur that's a bit wet and I don't have time to totally dry it. Don't have to worry about mold like you would if you boarded a wet Bev.

I use hops with hog rings. Have for many years. I hold the rings with a pair of pliers and push on the hide with the ring as I push on the hide with my thumb. Just as fast as using nails. Also easier to adjust if I need to as O go.

I noticed your hoops are oval? I cant see any spreader bars? How do you get them oval? Im getting a doz to try this season. Can you recommend a vendor or two?

glandman, those hoops were made by a trapper I knew. He used 3/8 rod and they started out round, just press in sides to get the oval. Had three sizes small, med and large since they only adjust so far. Stiff enough to hold the shape. I also have the store bought ones where you need a tension bar to get the oval.

If you do not have spreaders, you can also take a rope and pull the middle in. Put the rope on the fur or it will leave a mark on the leather.

Yep, I starting hooping my beaver this year and I can't see ever going back, I don't pre punch holes or anything I can just pop them right thru and for me it is SO MUCH quicker than nailing the beaver on a board. And another huge benefit is is you're putting the fur on a hoop, and realize you've made the hoop to big or small, you just adjust it, unlike plywood where you'd have to take all the nails off and start all over. Not to mention the hoops store easier and the fur dries quicker, and you don't have to worry about the fur slipping if you put it up wet.

I use hoops for my smaller beaver around 30 pounds or smaller and boards for the larger ones I use a heavy string to pull the middle of the hoop in to make the oval

Sounds like I didn't go wrong after all. The only thing I need to question is, It sounds like you do not close the hog ring? You just use it as a Hook from the hoop to the hide? Is that right.

Closing the Leg holes, eyes do you use the Hog wring or do I see pins in them to keep them closed. Thanks for all the replies. Thumb

No don't close the hog rings, you reuse them, and I use clothes pins to close my legholes or a small peice of softwood and some pins like you would use on a wood stretcher, some people like to sew them shut.

On the beaver above I used pins stuck into a thick piece of insulation. I've gone to using castration bands on the front legs and a piece of lath board with pins on the hind legs.
One thing on the hog rings, if you go to the farm store to buy them keep them all the same size.
