when you pull the tail, it sort of allows the tube in the tail to air out, if you leave the bone in the tail, it will rot quicker.

I am very new to trapping and I was just wondering why someone wouldn't just split the tail?

I'm really not sure what you're asking? You split the tail as far as needed and pull it out?You leave the bone and meat the tail will rot? Why would you not skin the tail?

Good lord willing and the creeks don't rise.

The tail has little bits of fat and flesh on it. These things rot, so they must be removed. In order to scrape it off, you must remove the bone.

You slit from halfway up the tail up almost to the anus. From the tail slit a V on either side of the anus, which connects to your leg-to-leg money cut. Pull the skin away from the base of the tail so you can get either a tail stripper or a clothes pin around the bone. Hold the base of the tail above your stripper with your other hand and yank down towards the tip of the tail. The bone should come out in one smooth motion. The tail should not break because you slit at least halfway down it, and you are not grasping the tail, just the bones. After this, continue cutting splitting the tail to the tip. (Tail slitters are little tools that are very nice for this, they are like a belly hook.) When it's on the beam you must scrape the tail, and when it's boarded you should pin it open so it can dry.

Destroying tails can be easy to do, but everybody does it at least a few times. It comes with practice. smile

I find it pretty easy to insert the knife tip at about the 3rd ring from the base of the tail, split it to and on both sides of the anus, then pop the tailbone out. Then go ahead & split the empty sleeve of the tail to the tip. It's just easier for me to do it that way, instead of splitting the whole tail first. Less chance of pulling the tail off.

Ok, I was asking if you split the tail from the anus to the tip in order to remove the bone. I know that the meat and bone has to come out. I have always just split my tails with the bone in. Thats just me and thats just the way I learned to do it for taxidermy.

when the coon is in the fleshing process the tail is split all the way to the tip. It is then scraped and pinned open to dry. the bottom lip comes off during this process as well so don't worry if you don't get all the lower lip. hope this helps

In answer to your question, you can do it either way, it is just faster for me to pull the tail bone then finish opening it up. Tom

coon dogg, I think I know what you're asking. Cutting the tail all the way down while it is still on the bone is difficult to make a strait cut all the way, especially at the small end. It's also more time consuming. The quickest, and most accurate way to get the job done therefore is to cut and separate the upper 30-40% of the tail, strip it, then either use a tail zipper or tail slitting guide to effect a strait cut to the tip of the tail. Did this answer your question?

Another easy way is to take a filet knife and dull the tip. Stick it in the stripped tail and you have a strait cut on the tail to the tip.

When I skin the coon I slit the tail down about 1/3rd to 1/2 the way. Some times the big old boars have a big cartlidge area about half way down the tail you have to cut loose. When I skin I cut around the tail and under of to the top if you will down to the end of the slit I cut. With the base of the tail now free i put my thumb in and open that more and then use my tail stripper to clamp around the tail bone and pull the pelt part of the tail free from the bone. I freeze like that and when I flesh I use a sharp knife and open to the end and flesh as I do the pelt. DON'T cut the tail bone off and leave the tail in the bone that makes getting the tail free far more difficult and time consuming.
