I took this pelt off the board on Saturday. Last night I noticed this bare spot that wasn't there before. There was some matted/knotted hair there when I fleshed it. I didn't attempt to get it straightened out because the knot was pretty bad. There are two pelts in the picture, one pelt is laying fur down on the other pelt.

Is there a big wad of decaying gunky flesh and fat on the other side of the pelt?

Spoilage or slipage due to extreme heat? Conibear or snare lock damage? Mice? ( gotta watch those dang mice). Could be you over scraped it?

No, there's nothing decaying on the back. Skin is clean. It has been warmer here. In the high 70's.

How badly does something like this effect the sellability and price of the pelt?

Well since it's on the edge, not as bad as in the middle of the back...Still it gives a buyer a chance to down grade. Could make a $30. pelt a $10 or lower..Too bad you couldn't soak it, cut it out, sow it, then re-strech it. Best, vv

If you hang the hide over the point end of your fleshing beam. Then apply to much downward pressure it can cause a slip area with beavers.
