Does everybody hate PETA?

If the comments over the last two days are any indication, PETA has no
fans among L.A. Times readers. Three recent posts addressed People for
the Ethical Treatment of Animal's latest move: urging the USA network
to drop their plans to air the Westminster dog show. Recently, the
group was able to persuade the BBC to refrain from airing the Crufts
Dog Show. Readers ranging from general pet lovers to professional dog
breeders set the comments section aflame with their burning hatred for
all things PETA:

JJ Flash says: PETA, like many organizations which started with the
best of intentions, has been hijacked by the usual bunch of left-wing
wackos whose only agenda is NOT animal welfare, but solely to give
their sad little lives some appearance of meaning.

Ashley says: PETA's headquarters in Norfolk, Va kills more than 3
times the average of ALL the shelters in the entire state of Virginia.
They are the ONLY known animal rights/shelter/welfare group to own a
cooler to store the bodies in because they can't dispose of them
properly right after they are destroyed. PETA is a complete
embarrassment to all those who love animals and are concerned about
animal welfare

kim says: PETA is a group of extremists who believe that to own any
animal is enslavement. They believe all animals should run free and
that there should be no pet animals at all. Responsible purebred dog
breeders spend huge amounts of money doing health tests and screening
on their dogs. They spay/neuter any animal that either has problems or
has tested positive for traits which lead to problems. The vast
majority of health issues seen in purebred dogs come from what are
known as "commercial breeders", "back yard breeders", and "puppy
millers".

lovemydogalways says: Anyone that thinks PETA is a friend to animals,
they are sadly mistaken. PETA's mission statement is end pets forever
- they consider them something that needs to be erased because they
are not wild and fending for themselves... Get rid of PETA, don't
support them, don't send them money - the HSUS is no better. What did
either group do with all the money they received after Hurricane
Katrina? They didn't save a single animal so where did all that money
that their commercials collected go? People that send them money are
paying them to take away your right to own pets -- duh...

Only a handful supported PETA's latest campaign:

"Peta has very high ethics and whatever they do its always the best
for the animals. And its better to euthanize dogs instead of keeping
them in small cages until the end of their lifes being depressed."

And then PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk herself (allegedley) had this to say:

"It is extraordinary, isn't it, to have a piece with no comment from
the very people it attacks? if anyone would like to know what PETA
believes and does, go to peta.org; to learn about the appalling
conditions under which dogs particularly are kept in rural USA, where
PETA provides free medical care, free sterilizationa dn free
euthanasia (these are not adoptable dogs, all those are referred to
animal shelters except the few we get and place), go to
helpinganimals.com or peta.org. PETA has not been taken over by
anyone. I started it and I'm still here, a 60 yr old envelope-pusher
who would like animals to be seen as the feeling, emotional and
interesting beings they are, not as hamburger, handbags and cheap
toys. Sometimes we have to be sexy or silly to get people's attention
these days, but the message is a serious one: no living being deserves
to be treated with anything but compassion even if that means changing
some of our old cruel habits. At PETA, we believe there is something
everyone can do, which is why our website offers free veg recipes,
alternatives to dissection, information on our successfully funding of
non-animal tests that are more sophisticated and quicker than the old
animal ones, lists of cosmetics and household products not tested on
animals; fashionable fur, leather and wool alternatives; even health
charities that are animal-and people-friendly and those that aren't.
And yes, we feel it is unethical to buy and breed dogs while the
rescue homes are full and many are put down or spend their lives in
kennels. Only the greedy and uncaring would think that a bad idea!"

What do you think? Is PETA out to get your pet? Or is PETA a
misunderstood animal welfare group with unusual publicity techniques?

All I can say is that my teeth were designed to eat meat.

If all those dog and cat owners really understood CEO Wayne Pacelle of HSUSites & CEO Ingrid Newkirks words they would kn ow that both orgs are out to end the domestication of all such animals. Most dog & cat owners seem to be to freaken stupid to know both HSUS & PETA want their animals removed from the chains of human slavery to. Both orgs want all domesticated animals extinct within one generation. How sick is it to send money to those folks??.

With HSUS and PETA its not about animals at all. Its about making money. HSUS does not take in animals and does not support local shelters. PETA kills most of the animals it takes in.

However most supporters of both groups are to stupid to see the future of what Pacelle and Newkirk really are searching for and winning their case in incremental form. A lot of shelters today have refused to adopt out dogs to hunters and would rather kill an adoptable hunting dog if it is to be used for hunting. Yet those same folks will support rehabb centers for wild predatory animals that they hope to see released into the wild someday which will most certainly be killing other animals. People have become so linear & judgmental in their thinking prowess today that, they can't see how stupid they are upon reflection.

I always thought PETA, along with the other orgs like them, just want to be against or rebel something. Nothing they say holds up to much scrutiny, and their talking points break down quickly when debated. Since their positions aren't based much on fact, it's based on "how they feel", and that can change with the wind. These people lead empty lives and are so filled with hatred towards others these orgs are just a tool to channel their miss-guided feelings. That's why I don't like the idea of being to apologetic towards these folks and not making them mad. They're already mad, and it's not what we do, I don't think, it's just a way to say how much they "care" more than we do.... Oh, and yes our teeth are for meat I believe too! I'm not a doctor, but out gall bladder makes bile right? Isn't that to break down fats to make them digestible for the intestines? Wouldn't seem like we would need that if we were only suppose to eat berries and roots.

dogs kil everything they can get there paws on. they are made by humans and should be kept by humans and would ruin eco system if let loose.

No ones likes PETA! Only hippies or Goths/Emo's like PETA. For their either so brain fried they have no idea what they are doing.

As many people that I talk too about peta and the hsus that agree they are organizations with hidden agendas. The fact is their bank accounts continue to grow at an alarming rate.
Most of their donations come from people that are not aware of where their money is going. They are tricked into thinking that their money is being used to help animals. The HSUS does not spend one cent one animals. Their millions is only used to buy votes and pass laws against anyone who is considered an "animal user".
The fact is anyone that has anything to do with "animal use" needs to be fully aware of these organizations and support the people willing to take them down.
I know for a fact that the only way to do this is with money and money alone. As I fought against them along with many others and ultimately lost due to lack of funds. Our lobbyists were bribed right under our noses. We did have the pleasure of seeing Pacelle lunge out in rage and had to be escorted out of the court room.

As a good friend used to say "You think its bad now, try sitting back and do nothing"

Very true Kim. Oh they do need alot of money for the huge salaries they pay themselves.
All interested parties need to join together to fight them. That would be hard to do.

PETA is way to left wing to ever accomplish much. We must be careful of animal rights groups that aren't as extreme.

Y'all folks think trappers have a dislike for PETA and HSUS? Try raising the subject over on some of the coonhound boards. Not only is PETA and HSUS against hunting but against hounds as well. Just a couple years ago PETA and HSUS jumped up in support of a bill (the PAWS bill) that would have greatly restricted breeders. Unfortunately the ever political American Kennel Club decided that the winds of fate favored the antis and cut a deal with them. To compound the problem the AKC had just reinstated their coonhound program and had hired some of the top name houndsmen to run the show. To say it got ugly would be an understatement.
Fortunately the bill was not only defeated (as was it's sponsor Rick Santorum R-PA) but an amazing coalition of dog and other pet fanciers was created to fight these efforts in the future.
We as trappers might ought to consider reaching out to people that may otherwise have nothing in common with us if we want to put up an effective resistance to PETA/HSUS. The enemy of my enemy is my friend!

Forgot to mention how they talk about messing up hunts and traps i've seen it in there. I know I know, I like to do a little recon to learn about an enemy. Little harsh calling them an enemy you should see what they call us.

always wondered why PETA always uses the term "fashionable fur" as something they're against.... Would they be for wearing fur that is not fashionable? Just wondering.

I wished more people would understand the issues involved with these nuts. I deal with a lady who believes humans have no rights here on this earth but to serve animals.

In the animal control world we see the nuts and fruit cakes who actually believe this garbage.
