I remember reading somewhere where u can just use bolt cutters and just drill a hole into the jaws to make a crimper. Was wondering what size drill bits are used for crimping each size cable?

A cutter isn't built like a Crimper tool is... the crimpers are much sturdier and need to be for long term use. I do a lot of fencing with High tension smooth wire and don't think my bolt cutters could handle the torque.

you can not drill a hole in the jaws of bolt cutters, I tried it and broke many bits, lol. Lowes sells a swager for about $25. or you can make your own with bolt cutters by using a 1/8" cutting wheel on a grinder, just cut a gap between the jaws and you have a pair of very effective swagers. I made a pair 4 years ago out of a pair of 14" bolt cutters and I still use them with no problems.

I bought a crimper and found it was faster and easier to just smash the furrels on with a hammer on a chunk of steel. Works great and holds well.

there was a recent post that suggested a hammer and 1/4 inch nuts.....I tried it......easy, and they hold

DO NOT trust nuts. I used to use them and found that they don't grip the cable like the ferrules do. I made cable stakes and the cable would just slip out of the nut but I have never had that happen since I switched strictly to aluminum ferrules.

Ive been just smashing the ferrules with a hammer but figured a crimper would work a little easier.

what you are talking about is annealed nuts, they will work just fine. If you try to use hardened nuts like you buy at the hardware store you will have nothing but problems.

I have to resectfully disagree, I have used thousands of 8-32 nuts straight from the hardware store for end stops on my 3/32 cable snares and NEVER had one slip at all. I used to use the annealed 1/4" nuts but they are too hard to pound and are way overkill on snares IMO. They work great for disposable stakes though, the steel nuts grip the cable far better than aluminum ferrals.

As for a swager, I can't help much. I use a hammer. I do however have an old pair of bolt cutters that intend to grind notches in and try them. The ones I saw at menards are simply ground flat back an inch and a half or so from the tip on both cutting sides, not the kind that will make pretty crimps on your ferrals.

Pounded thousands of ferrules over the years. Bought a bench swager last year and before the year was out bought a hand pair for in the truck.Worth every penny.

I've gotta go with ADC, I've been using nuts for stops for 13 years and have had only 1 failure, and that was probably my own fault. That is out of thousands used, thats pretty good performance in my book.
