I'm doing a job where a skunk is under a foundation. Unfortunately I can't do a positive capture because of a downspout and steep terrain. So I set two baited traps. It always seems like my baited sets take a couple days or more to connect. I was wondering if the skunks are shy of a new trap placed near their den. I cover my traps with a white feed bag with the bottom cut out. Eventually I get them, just wish it was faster.

I hope it's not dead. There's no way to get under there.

Just went through this situation. In my case, you could smell the skunk but it never exited or attempted to exit the crawl space under the house. The pro they called in after I left sent his kid in and the kid pulled out what used to be a skunk. All the ants left were fur and bones. I felt like quite the professional after that one, lol.

Ouch! This could be a good use of that remote inspection video tool that was posted here earlier.

It may be a secondary dening site and they just don't visit it all that often.

Flies... Good idea. I also know you can get desensitized to the smell. They show up for work and it's strong, but then they get used to it and it seems weaker. We'll see. Hopefully I'll catch it tomorrow. The other thing I'll do is put a soft block over the den entrance.

fill in the hole? make sure nothing is moving in or out. they are notorious for coming and going. exclude while away and the problem is solved.

I agree 100% with Steve. This time of year if the client is smelling "skunk' and it's stronger inside than out and it doesn't seem to be getting any weaker you have a dead or dying skunk under there.

Soft block was not moved after the first night. We looked under with a scope but couldn't make out anything. It's a big foundation. I'll give it two more days. If the block is moved I'll try to do a positive set.

two years ago i had a dead skunk under a concrete porch. No way of getting to it other then digging the whole thing up. I "mud jacked" under the porch. The smell was gone and there was definately no way any others were ever going to get under it again.

Mud jacked is a high pressure concrete/mud that is used to raise sinking/falling slabs, foundations, porches and such.

I have had several skunk calls where they have taken so much dirt from under concrete slabs the slabs are sinking. Newer homes where the ground was not compacted well before the porch was poured it happens often. Have had groundhogs do the same.
