Have any successful canine trappers used paint for treating canine traps? I have used flat black spray paint on body grips and never noticed and odor.
I realize that it probably could not be done in season but I wonder if done ahead of the season if there would be any problems.

Just curious
Thanks

Mac

i have heard of people paintin snares quite often and catching k9's in them but thats a little different. im not sure if it would spook them but if you let it sit for the summer it would get rid of a lot of odor. cant hurt to try it yourself.

Thanks guys. I understand the only way to know for sure is to do it but I was just looking to see what some experienced canine men have to say. I too do not care for dips. I have dyed and waxed for many years but always interested in learning new things.

Thanks for sharing Jason.
Thanks to all.

Hey my self I think thats lame but thats me It isn't cheaper to paint if your going to want to cover them use speed dip or Trap dye or do it the old fashion way with tree bark yes you have to boil them but if your going to paint them and let them hang a week or what ever it is even faster to boil and dye at once .
I know that keep traps in good condision more so then pait look at cars & trucks they rust out in a few years and ther is a lot of prepto those . so my thoughts is painting is alme way to take care of an investment like traps . My thoughts Thanks . kevin

I would expect to have problems as soon as the traps were scratched up by either wear or biting.

when that happens, bring them home, clean them up, re-boil, and wax, don't worry about the paint until next season. if you clean and boil well, it's in the ground, the animal doesn't care what color it is.

this type of question pops up pretty regular. This is not my expierence but another guys I know.....he has trapped for many moons and doesnt treat his traps with anything. No wax, no dip, no paint, no nothing. He runs the same #3 Mongomeries year after year and catches more than afew coyotes. Power washes them when they get packed with crud but thats it.

I asked him about wax and he said he likes the speed of a waxed trap but to much trouble messing with a wax pot.

I boil and wax mine. No dye. Have not trapped enough years to
preach wax or no wax.

Thanks for all the replies. I am not a newbie but do on occasion ask newbie questions like this. I have talked to two well known trappers that have both shared that they use paint on their canine traps. I just wanted to hear what some others thought of the idea.

The way I figure it one would probably have to replace traps fairly soon after a catch and may not be able to use in season again. But I am always thinking about various things to try. I know a lot of very good canine trappers that use dip. I have given it the old college try but I just do not have confidence in the product. I have caught canines using it but it really boils down to confidence and performance.

Thank you all very much. Any more responces are much appreciated.

Mac
