Over the years I have paid little attention to trap chains, other than the stock chain they came with different traps, and not knowing what their names were.

In recent times, since a member here, I have become more aware of chain types by listening to trappers talk about adding, or modifying stock chain by changing it out. And, in addition, the "chain" used for drags, on earth anchors, stakes and drowning units.

I didn't have a clue beyond a guess what a twist link was from a machine link, etc. With a little determination to fill the void in my twisted thoughts about whose link belongs to who and what, I finally know better now.

For those not familiar with chain terminology, the following references to them below may help you become familiar with chain jargon.

There may be others that I am not aware of. If so, please feel free to chime in with additional references.

Jonathan

Machine Chain

Twist Link Chain

Double Loop Chain

Steel Sash Chain

Oval Link Chain

Coil Chain

Passing Link Chain

Lock Link Chain

Thanks Jonathan..as usual good stuff....now if you can... identify it by size/ number...ie #3 machine chain vs #2 twist link. Might be helpful to knuckleheads like myself.

MChewk, I am a missing link of sorts, and a pedigreed knucklehead, and while drafting that post got a twisted link and forgot to include that important element.

Chain sizes and dimensions (the "A," "B" and "C",) along with additional chain descriptions are in this reference - the source of the photos:

Chain Sizes And Dimensions

You'll have to click around a bit on each chain type for the specs on each one.

Chains aren't cheap these days. With more and more coyotes moving into my fox areas, I'm wondering how light of a chain is strong enough to hold our North East coyotes. I know the chains on my 1&3/4 Dukes look way too weak. Was looking at #2 straight link machine chain in Home Depot the other day and was wondering if it's strong enough.

Thanks!

Yeah, thank you, Andy! You answered my question before I was even dumb enough to ask it. However, the picture you posted of the #2 straight link looks a lot heavier duty than the straight link I was looking at. I'm sure it was rated at 300 and sumthin lbs but it looked flimsy, like the stuff in Jonathan's picture up top.

I have just learned this year the zinc plating that comes on most chains is easily removed by white vinegar a coupla hours( 3 - 4 ) and it was all gone. Afterwards I rinsed it of in a 1 1/2 - 2 gallons of water and a box of baking soda.

Thanks Andy great info!
I don't bother removing my plating I let the soil corrode it up then dip it to seal it.
