How do you beaver trapping masters secure the deep end of drowner wires? I understand fastening weight, but how can you stake them in 4ft of water. Will rerod work? How do you pound it in? Should the stakes of whatever kind be angled or straight down? How secure do they have to be when pulling straight up to test them? I'm using 5' - 20' of 3/32 with L locks.

Is it effective to rig snares on slide wire drowners?

I'm no expert, but I carry in feed bags. I fill them with enough gravel, rocks, or even sod to make a heavy enough weight.

You can use a seasoned pole out of the dam. Wrap the wire around it, and drive it to the bottom. The problem with this method is that you have to wade out to retrieve sprung traps and animals.

If the set site is close to my truck, I mostly use 8" concrete blocks. If memory serves me, I have only had a couple of these pulled to the bank by beavers. With the flat sides, blocks do not roll around or move well on the bottom.

Later,
45/70,

I used to use alot of concrete blocks or RR plates. When using a stake out in deep water where I was about to go over my waders I would use a weight out where it was deep enough to drown him then tie another short piece of cable or wire on out to my stake, which was fastened low down on the stake. That way you don't have to pull the stake , but have enough slack to lift up the weight and catch and/or sprung trap, and slide it back to the bank. If it was way over my waders and only had a lite weight, I would tie it to the cable and run a baling wire from there on to the other side and tie to something.

I use 1 ft of railway steel which weighs 33.3 lbs per ft. I then wield a rebar handle to one end to make it easy to carry and to which I can attach my drowning wire.
Cheers

Concrete/cement blocks! They weigh about 43 pounds on average. Here's how I hook'em up.

If you have access to a brick yard more than likely they have a scrap pile where they dump there broken bricks and pieces could be gotten that will work as your drowners. You could bore out holes as needed with a masonary bit so that cabels or chain could be fastened.A skill saw with a masonary blade could be used to make V notches a quarter inch deep on two opposite sides of the bricks to allow 1/8 cable to be used to attach the drowner cable to the bricks unless they already are notched like Possum skinners above.
