These are a few from my line this year and I havent braved the snow yet today to see if they moved with the snow last night.
I believe that the little one is a least weasel and the rest are all shorttail's.

I have never caught a Least so I am not sure. The Pic doesn't show it but it does have a very few black hairs on the tip of the tail

I got a question. I caught my first weasel yesterday and i had it in a #0 so it didnt kill it right away. It gave off a really musky smell. Will this scare other weasels away?

Thanks.

Coonbuster, you have a hot trap now being sprayed. Move it and set in another location and place another one around there will be enough smell around to attract anything 200 yards down-wind.
Tension adjustments try bending the arm, this will lift or lower the pan, you can also place a DRY leaf under the pan and this needs more weight to go off. A wedge on the side of the trap and box will make it firm and any movement of the box will not set the trap off. This is what happens when they jump all over the trap before commiting to the hole.
Blord; that little guy is probably a Least weasel Mustelidae rixosa ;males can go to 8 inches females to 6 inches.with tail

What if I put a few drops of weasel musk at each set?

LOL guess what! When you get 5 inches of snow and then a inch of rain expect your weasel boxes to be floating even if the culvert is ALWAYS dry! I found that out today!

Skunk24; That's why I suggested to 2poor to put styrophome on the bottom. That weather system should make them move.
We had a major marsh fire ie; 5 sections burnt here and the poor rats got froze out now with no cattail cover, and around every frozen dead one there is weasel tracks. The yotes will clean up soon

Here is a couple of design changes that I have done this year;

1=Tremclad the traps to cover up any rust, blood does a number on them, even at -20 it forms through the season
2=Wrapped the areas around the springs with electrical tap. This is one area if left and the weasel comes in sideways, and is hit . The sharp edge punctures the hide and it goes as a slight.
3= Used a bullrush as a cushion, so the trap does not go off with a little action round it. The meat is also wired with fine wire. twist ties stripped.
4= Secret where I make my extra money, and keep this hobby going. See those little red specks, those fleas earn a 17$ tax credit. 3 times 17=51 and this guy is not even in the auction yet. Actually he is going into Megan Imrie's Olympic Biathion account for her Oylmpic dreams.

#5 design change, notice the dog area is bent inward and this hardens the trap firing response.

Hey guys. I have been trapping them for a few years and have some questions and observations. I originally built my boxes to accomidate 1.5 ls but our DNR outlawed them in weasel boxes unless you tend everyday. Long story short, I now have the rat traps with the large plastic pan. I am catching every mouse, vole and shrew that enters the box and can't seem to get enough pan tension. Any suggestions. I have put electical tape over the striker bar and also the sharps spring ends and this has helped with damage. Also no rust marks on them. We have caught almost 50 this year as incidentals in our martne/fisher and mink traps. They are everywhere!! Any pointers on skinning them, it still takes me a while to put one up.

Try your boxes off the ground and this should slow down the voles. Once it get to 12f the deer mice sould go into hibernation.
So what is " a while time wise" when you are doing them?
When you are catching that many hope you are saving the glands for sale.
With the rust check carefully and wipe a white cloth over the bars, volia. Seems the steel they use now rust fast, especially when around the blood.
Enjoy them when you have them, they do follow the mouse populations a year behind time.

Takes me longer to skin a weasel then a muskrat. Probably 10 mins by the time it is on the board. Havn't saved any of the glands. Any pointers for harvesting them and storing. Also have lots of grey backs and early browns, any market for them? I have been losing confidence in the rat traps because they set off so easy. I have been having better luck using our marten boxes with 120s and wooden pans. The mice run under pan and weasels go over.

Will a castor based beaver lure work for weasels?

Thanks,
Luke
