Seeing many questions on the hay sets. I thought I'd post how I make mine. It may not be right, but it works for me ...

Double stake 2 traps. (in cold weather place hay under traps to keep from freezing)

Cover both traps lightly with hay

Add a basketball size of hay in the middle

Add your favorite gland lure on the sides facing the traps with a shot of urine on the top of the hay

Hope these pictures help. This set works from the start of the season and does even better once snow flies.

this may sound stupid but do you leave them alone after a snow or do you clean the hay off ? add more hay?

Unless it is a few feet of snow I leave them alone. In nature snow will cover the hay. Animals are used to snow covering stuff up.

Yea, I have been thinking of trying this set under some pines to keep some snow off but where I live every time the wind blows NW we get 6". I am trying to figure out a good place or way of doing this to keep the set working through big snows or any set.

Nice pics. I don't think their is a wrong way. I would try ten different ways and see which works.

Thanks for the post. Do you know if this set works for greys?

I just let my mind wander, and it didn't come back.

I have not had a problem with deer, but once did have cows moved into the field where my hay sets were. They ate the hay but missed the traps.

I wonder if the yote gland lure keeps the deer away?

i just can't help but think the jaws would get jambed with hay and not allow a good hold. putting grass or vegetation on a normal set is discouraged, how come it works for the hay set.

Rule of thumb is to bed a trap rock solid, but those traps look like they will just rock back and forth. How do you stabilize them, or do you?

Not a single 1 yet, I have caught coyotes in dirthole sets right next to a hay set. BUT none "yet" in a hay set.

As long as you lightly cover the traps with hay you will not have a problem.

Once in awhile I will have deer set off a trap or 2, but no big problems

Although I have never caught a grey in a hay set (due to low populations here) I'm sure it would work fine

On my sets when I say to cover the trap with hay people always assume I mean bury the trap under an inch of hay. Also people confuse hay with straw.
I pick the short soft fuzz off the hay. I only cover enough to conceal the trap. So far I have never had a problem.

if your placing the trap on bare ground you can hit the area where the trap is going to lay with your hammer. If it is freezing conditions just prop up the trap with the hay you place on the underside of the trap to stabilize it.

straw in my opinion is too thick and would clog a trap. out here in maine we dont even have what you southerners call "straw" everything is hay and it is very fine and should not foul up a trap. i dont thing fox urine covered hay with gland lure on it would smell too good to a deer if you kept it freshend often.

In your opinion, which means you've never tried one of these. Yes, I use straw on these sets, which deer don't like as much as cow feed/hay. Bed the trap on straw, then use a pair of choppers to cover the set with small/short pieces of straw. Everything with urine is a curiosity to all mammals. That big hump in the middle is the attraction because even after a good snow, there's a big hump in the middle of the field. No matter what, you're going to have deer problems with this set. Not saying they're not worth setting, just expect deer tracks on your set daily.

I can see where short peices of straw would work now that I think about it. straw is mostly, or should be, hollow stems. The trap will crush it when it closes on it. Plus unless there is still grain on the straw the cows and deer won't eat it.
