How many of you use saw dust when fleshing coon? How well does it work? Are there any problems with using it?

I have used it many times use soft wood saw dust as it absorbs better. But in my area it is usally cold enough or put in frezzer for 10 minutes or so and fat hardens enough where it is not necessary.

As was stated, if the fat is set up there isn't much need to use saw dust. tried it once and just ended up with a mess to clean up. Dry pieces of burlap work just as well without the mess.

I've never tried it as I thought it would just end up being a mess.
Today got to thinking about it, and wondered if I was missing out on something.

Hilltop,
How are you using the cardboard? Are you just putting it on the floor? When using saw dust don't you put in on the beam to soak up the oil?

I use a kiddie pool with sawdust in it. Keeps everything together instead of being kicked all over. I've also used cardboard, but I think it makes more of a mess, getting fat stuck to my boots, then rolling up the whole thing to discard/burn. The sawdust allows me to scoop out the fat, into a bag, into the trash or woods.

I use sawdust all the time on my coon and never have a problem. Helps absorb the grease on the bottom well. after everything is said and done I just use a brush and brush any left overs off. I have never had a problem at the sale. alot of my coons grade high.

So you just put the saw dust on the fleshing beam as needed and brush out the fur when done? Is that correct??

I cool my coon in the freezer before fleshing. Saw dust is used to clean my fleshing beam and knecker knife. I use saw dust on the floors and after I have dried my coon skins a day or so to remove any greese.

Can I put some saw dust on the coon hide while I'm fleshing? Or should it only be used on the beam and around the tail?

Started useing saw dust about 5 years ago it works very well. Just put on the fat at the open end of coon and no fat gets on the fur don't need to put all over. As you scrap and fat get on your beam just but some saw dust on it wipe and your ready for the next coon. You'll have to try it you might not like it.

I use sawdust on raccoon and beaver pelts...

...I put a coat of sawdust on the flesh side of the pelt before fleshing and a small handful on my beam as well.
