Last season I tried an experimental bait, the recipe I had called for red fox urine but when I added it it got an amonia smell pretty bad. Is there a cure for that or what, will it go away? I'll leave it out and use a few drops at the set instead if not.

If it is a good urine and you arent adding too much to the volume of bait it should age in nicely over time. Some gas off will occur with urine to a degree again depending on how much you have added initially. It may be the urine is reacting to other ingredients in your mix possibly.

Good question.

Also can you leave the lid loose to let the amonia out. I've heard of doing that on urine but will it hurt the bait?

there is a reaction with urine and glycol at times and quite vigorous at times when mixed with other ingredients.

Benzoate has no adverse affects upon urines or uric acid to my knowledge. It will calm a urine to a degree if over used but it wont make it more volatile as with more ammonia odor.

instead of leaving the lid "loose" can you use an air lock like when making wine and beer. These locks r made of 1/4" plasict tubing and are in a S shape, a little water is poured into the bottom of the S. This lets gases escape but keeps flies out. Anyone aver try this? Thanks, Rob

One can also use a valve stem core from a tire or buy them new. They are inserted the same way into a lid or jar as the airlock system is. Be sure to use the rubber grommets with the air lock system or the flies may get to the vent area and lay eggs.

Thanks.

So, you think the amonia smell would have dissapated over time? It was added in at a rate of 1 pint in a gallon of bait solution.

I agree with Bob J ADC, let the combo age a while like all good formulas shoud be and i'm sure it will blend right in with the other ingredients. Ace
