I saw in FF&G where it was suggested that MAPLE was the best one to use, however I never found it to be that great... Maybe in other areas , it's different. Your thoughts? Where's Paul when I need 'im?

around here it varies quite a bit ... usually based on what's available ... heck, everything from red cedar to pine and everything inbetween ... but more often it's sweet gum, poplar followed by river birch

Always had better luck to leave some of the bark on it, just peeling half of the bark off.

I always use whatever they are feeding on, varies from place to place, mostly poplar, birch and gum though. Like to use the ones they already peeled for me, although I am no beaver trapper as our population is low.
life is good......

I prefer nicked up, fresh cut Aspen, about the size of a pool cue. MN Beaver have been under the ice eating the stash that went sour and our desperate for fresh feed.
They will commit suicide to get to fresh Aspen bark, in fact this morning several did just that !

I like to use pople/aspen like some others have said. I think that Maple might be good now because the sap is running(I have been seeing a ton of tapped trees for syrup) and could be that the beavers have a sugar-tooth after being under the ice all winter. that's my thought anyways, could be wrong

Depends on what part of the country your trapping in. Willow , gum and poplar almost anywhere.I;ve sliced pieces of cypree knees off of the knee to expose the white color underneath, using the whitecolor for a attractor at a bait type set. ,the color gets them to the spot and your food lure gets them into the trap.I use maple bark for the same purpose and the same way.The trouble with both is they loose their color quickly and need to be changed often.Maple would not be my first choice...........Carl
The more Iam around people the more I don't want to be..........

I helped a guy make a beaver set and he used aspen and the next day had a beaver in the set.

If I were trapping up north, popple would be my first choice, however, I'm not up north.
Down here, sweet gum is the favorite fall and winter food for beavers, but the when peeled, it turns brown in hours, as does most of the other woody plants. 24 hours later, it looks like it was peeled last week.
The best I've found "down here" is maple. If I peel it past the cambien layer, the woody part stays nice and white for days. I don't know about y'all's maple up north, but that's how it is down here...
