I talk to you briefly on rendering skunk fat at the southeastern. Well its rendering just fine. It smells great. The problem is when it cools at night it turns into a lard appearance. How can I keep it in a liquid form when it cools?
I always bought my lures and now I wanna start learning this part of trapping so excuse my ignorance lol

I'm no Paul Dobbins but (IMO) (and I've rendered a good many types of animal fats in the sun) it's doing exactly what it's supposeed to do!
If it makes you feel any better, pour it off during the heat of the day in a seperate container!
All oils will harden or thicken(to a degree) as they get cooler and thinner when it gets warmer, just like motor oil!

Skunk fat will NOT get rock hard and will remain plyable, which is the beauty of using it in canines lures.
Not only does it smell good to canines, it keeps the lure "workable" in extreme cold weather! wink

Man Paul I smelled that stuff as soon as I opened this post. Yeah listen to LTGrey. It does get thicker, and a little dab will do ya.

even used straight it`s some good stuff. I render about 10-20 gallons a year pendng how many skunks I scrape and flesh in a given year. the guys that know how to use it get great results. here is a tip for skunk fat based smear lures, dye them black with any black food coloreing. on sunny days it will absob the suns rays better and give off a fresh stronger dose all over again. in the west we get 300 days of sun a year, often sunny even in the dead of winter.

Mike Mcmillan makes a great beaver tail oil. Its in a dark liquid form. I wonder how he does that?

Rendered beaver tail oil is used as a wolf lure by a trapper up in B.C. when mixed with a 2nd indredient, which I am not at liberty to say, as it is all he uses and takes plenty of wolves.

He keeps it a mile from his house, however! smile

chunk your beaver tails into cubes or grind 'em ... let the sun and time do the rest
