I've heard blue buckets work real well.
There are varying opinions on what shape it should be.

I hear they work well for some trappers using white buckets. I had no activity at all around my bucket set I tried this year. I had a cat track running within 20' of it.

I use 3 doz. river trappin, use all white buckets, most buckets have coon ever day.I like em cause they are fast to set and move one to my land sets.

I dont use buckets much anymore but the ones I use are white. The white attracts coon the same way a white pvc pipe does.

i have used bucket sets for the last 5 years here in NW Illinios. i set about 2 dozen sets, most with two buckets. color doesnt matter, but if you dont want someone finding them, go with black or brown. i have caught just as many coon in white as any other color though, so it dont matter to the coon. i pre-bait, set out buckets 2 weeks in advance to opening day, without traps, and bait them with genaric dry cat food with fish oil mixed in. has an awesome smell. cheap vanilla extract mixed in works well also. then when opening day comes, i place my 220's in the slots of the bucket, and catch whatever has been used to coming to it every night for two weeks. this way, you dont have to "go to the coon", you can let them come to you and you dont need to be as picky for location. i set near trails every time. two buckets within 10 ft of each other for about every 100-200 yards, depending on the land. ive caught some xxxxl coon every year. faster than any other set i think. and the best set locations are the best ones the next year and the year after.

I camo my bucket in flat brown or olive green for less theft, they are hard to see in the woods that way, I catch half my coons in them the other half in foot holds. once the crops are down they seem to work better than when there is standing corn.

here is a coni cage I built yesterday, I think I am going to like them. they take up a lot less room than a bucket

Ive set bucket set on public ground before wich would usually be a no - no. I have found that if you can locate a tree close to a coon trail that has a fork or flat spot part way up you can drill holes in the bucket and wire it up in the tree I would suggest at least 4 feet up. I always use a bucket painted camo to avoid prying eyes with this type set. Ive caught many a coon with this method and never a bird dog. I have however had a set-up or two stolen, a risk you run on public ground. Just my 2 cents.
