I've used some of my DPs without doing anything except removing factory oil. I've dipped some in petroleum-based dip. I've painted some. I haven't been satisfied with any of these methods.

The untreated traps rust badly, the dipped traps are gummy and harder to fire, the painted ones lost their paint rapidly (after one catch, usually) and then start to rust.

How do you folks treat your dog proofs? I'm not interested in brand of trap here, just in how you keep them protected and in good working order. They're way too expensive not to protect from rust and corrosion.

I used logwood dye. Only trapped one season so far with my DP's, but they seem to have held up pretty good -- no rust, binding, etc.

I have always speed dipped mine. I live in mud country. Only rock here is hauled in! If you're trapping in rocky streams/areas I don't think there is anything you can put on them that will stay and prevent rust. If you catch enough coon they'll keep the rust off!
I don't have a problem with the speed dip getting gummy if I dip them early enough in the summer. I do have to scrape the dip off the dog before the 1st use. I'm going to try spray painting this year.

I been painting mine with brown rustoleum but like you said they get polished pretty easily. I have to repaint them each season which takes money and time. Kind of a no win battle. Good question.

Dummy yourself. I think it's the design of DP traps that gives me trouble. With legholds and body-grippers, they're all exposed to the air and can drip and dry well, but the enclosure of the DP makes for too much dip left behind and when the gasoline evaporates there's too much dip left.

Kind of like you, jacko, too much dip left, hahhahhahahahhahahahahahhahahahaha.

No prob with pull-outs? I've been hesitant to try wax, but then when you think about it, a waxed leghold doesn't cause pull-out problems, so why should a waxed DP?

I logwood dye mine as well. I may wax the Griz Style DP's but not my Yancy's, it makes them too easy to fire. On the griz type with the exposed trigger you could more easilly remove the wax from the trigger/dog area.

when the gasoline evaporates there's too much dip left.

Telling on yourself now, like i said IF you ever learn how to properly dip traps it won't gum up on ya. But after reading about bobcats in the top of tree's I doubt there's any hope of you ever figuring much of anything out when it comes to trapping!

Good thing all the animals in arkinsaw are dumb, lol.

Don't know which magazine the article was in but a few years back somebody said they soaked them several days in vegetable oil and then hung them out to dry. I tried it and its my preferred method.

First question would be...

Why are putting your finger in a set trap?

I wax mine and except for the occasional one that needs to have some mud rubbed into the trigger slot to give it some resistance, I think it is best so far. I do my Yancy traps that way also.

Don't you have anything constructive to do? Go clean a pelican or something.
