Ive been thinking recently and Im planning on trying my hand at a little mink and raccoon trapping next season and I know with trapping as with anything thier are many many possibilities on lures and baits and traps and gizmos that can be bought...trust me I did it with fishing...Ive got hundreds of dollars in rapala lures some that havent even hit the water haha. Im just trying to narrow down possibilities for baits and lures specifically for mink and coon, I do tons of small game hunting and deer hunting and fishing during the season and was hoping to be able to salvage many bait possibilities from thier? Also looking for reccomendations on lures...dont want to buy many...maybe 3 that seem to be the most popular among folks on here.

thank you for any help

jeff

Any type of fish impaticular? I cant get loads of sun fish REAL easy down at the local pond, Ive also seen a few crayfish in the creeks, not real sure how to catch them, I remember someone telling me something about using a milk jug to catch them

suckers or carp are good, sunfish would work if thats all you have, just make sure they're legal to use for bait

No regulations against it that I know of barbwire, not many carp around here. Are a few suckers though. What size chunks should go in the pockets you think?

They should be legal if you fillet your gills. you are eating the meat. and freeze the rest I am not sure about Conn. but if exposed bait is legal @ water sets. this is what I do. I freeze the scraps from the gills and crappie I catch in the fall. I than take the bait out in just enough time to thaw for when I plan to set traps I make a pocket at a good location tear the fish in 2 throw 1/2 in the hole take one skin and put it by or on top of pocket with scales out. (also the intestines are a good visual attranctant as at most kill areas you will notice the intestines close by) Now I lure with fishoil squirting up on top of bank to bring down bank runners. Mike

If you have a access to a meat grinder I would grind the fish up ( after the entrails have been removed) That way the animal will work the set alittle longer instead of the critter being able to just reach over the trap and grab a chunk and leaving. But if you have to go with chunk size I would cut them up about the size of a golf ball

I don't have natural oysters, but the ones out of a can will sure do the trick for me.

I like the idea of grinding the whole mess up, anyone use big masonery jars and fill em and throw em in the freezer? I believe exposed bait in CT is illegal period. but the scent from a spoonful of ground fish in a pocket would get alot of critters attention by my thinking anyway

I think I would break those jars.I cut the top and side out of a bunch of milk cartons so they still have the handle intact.I plan to grind some fish and freeze it in those.

Thanks everyone! Caught a womping two coon in a cage last season my total was 2 coon, 9 skunks and a grinner haha. Released all them because I never had time before school started to deal with it. Ill plan it out better and hopefully if I can find a nice spot land a mink this coming season

Using ground fish this season. Freezing it in one gallon ziplock bags as you can fit more in a freezer that way compared to jars. Might put it in 1 gallon jars for on the line but now I am thinkin about something plastic so it won't break.

what kind of luck do you mink and coon guys have with chunked fish presserved with sodium benzoate??

Freezer space is at a premium for me and would like to try the chunked fish and benzoate.

Anyone care to comment.

Thanks,

Teal

i gig frogs alot, so when i get done taking the legs of, i freeze the upper body in a ziploc bag, i can fit 4 or 5 in a quart freezer bag, i dont freeze bulk of anything, that way i dont have to unfreeze a bunch to get a couple to refresh sets or make a couple new ones. i also use the left over crawfish from a cookout, and gigged suckers chunked up in 2in x 4in pieces (size doesnt really matter as long as you dont use to little or to much)

Use fresh frozen whitefish heads, big sized bait, cheap, forked stick to pin it way back in pockets set. Change bait every few days, depending on weather.
