I've used #1 LS, work good for grinners...LOL but not joking they can be used, I had one hold a coon while he was hanging from a tree in my mink set, but like what rat trapper said better to use something larger.
I am a strong supporter of Catch and Reset trapping.
It's the best practice for our sport!

How would you modify a #1 long for coon? Other than put another spring on it, I suppose.

You bet they'll work. As long as the springs are strong. Brad

2X brad. A strong #1 holds better than a 1 1/2 IMO as less leverage to work with than the 1 1/2 jaws.

I love #1's on a drowning rig for coon, a strong spring is a must! Add a second spring and they do well on dry land... prob one of the most under valued traps on the market. imho

Hundreds of coons have been caught in #1 long springs....B&L made the best.... IMO..... A good modification to do to a #1 for coon is to remove the chain from the spring and put it on the other end of the trap... just drill a hole in the end of the frame just below where the jaws come through....when a coon pulls on the trap their foot will be pulling toward the spring where the jaws are tighter....not a new trick by any means.....but a good one.....

#1 and #11 are my go to traps for coon, used the 1 1/2 L/S in the past and had pullouts, If I had only 1 1/2 L/S to work with I would add a spring and make them #2's to improve the holding power. Have some 1 1/2 traps in the shed never use them. Jerry Herbst

BLake and Lamb... but we also caught one heck of a coon with a vicor number 1 with one spring, not ecommended unless drowing rigged but it will work in a pinch

how do you add the extra spring on the longspring? in short you compress the spring, pop the jaws, add new spring & replace old spring (tied closed) and then replace the jaws... In practice it normally doesn't work out that way as most traps you have to modify the jaws so the second spring will work correctly.

Lots of fired and empty traps, especially with back feet, compared to 1.5 traps.
