I've always bought my chain at conventions from trap supply dealers. I ran out of chain recently, and found some straight link galvanized chain I had hung onto for some reason. It's plenty heavy, and looks the same as chain from trap supply dealers......only it's galvanized. Will this chain be alright. I'm replacing crappy chain on canine traps.
Would like to hear your thoughts on this.
Thanks.

cool

You bet IMO it would be fine..

I buy all my chain from Lowes cause I can actually see what I'm buyin....straight , twist....when you order from trappers supply # 2 twist link could be something totally differant..

I dip all my chains in muratic (sp) acid for about 10 seconds and rinse off with water.. It will begin to get a light coat of rust within a hour. I then cold dip them.

By the way, you can get Muratic Acid at any pool supply dealer. And be careful with it!!

Billfrank...Is the chain you buy galvanized or zinc coated.

Or will the muratic acid work on either?

I buy zinc coated and the acid will work on both.

i do not know whether its zinc or galvanized but its the stuff that buys shiny and stays that way lol , i have several dozen traps on 5 foot chains with the stuff and it works fine and no ive never dipped it in any acids, mine gets dyed and waxed like any other and ive never had a coyote or coon or bob cat or beaver complain about it yet.

none

Bottomline, the chain should be fine,I've used the twist link myself.Instead of muratic acid though,I use straight vinegar,it'll have that chain cleaned up in no time.

Actually Blak, the chain looks pretty good. It don't have any rust on it, and it's dull.....not shiny. I have had it around for years.
I had a pm from someone that said the same thing about soaking in Vinegar.
Thanks for the comments everybody. ;\)

Bottomline, leaving it as is shouldn't hurt anything either,it just won't take dye,but I don't think the critters care.

Okay tell me why chain needs to be dyed?By the time my catches see the chain it's already too late for them, plus I don't have to worry about chains getting deeply rusted over the years and giving me a weak link.

Just boil with baking soda and use.

Acid does great on rust. Much faster than vinegar....even when heavily cut with water.
