very cool thread, here are some of my modded #2s, victor. They are baseplated, some have heavy duty swivels, lammed, and beefer springs.

Ya that was me longspringman. I'll tell you what running the coils, and longsprings side by side there is no comparison that when the weather gets nasty what trap will still be working when I make the pads work I'll have to post it. I'd rather not have pads, but what are you going to do. Thanks Sterling is one of the places I didn't check.

I have amassed a sizeable quantity of the darn things. After using the #3 and #4 Blake and Lambs last season on yotes and cats I found them to bed very easily especially in dry washes and using drags on ten foot of chain. When they fire off and take hold of the critter they dont lose their grip. Rock solid lock up and holding power to boot.

Fezz, it looks like you used rivets to put in the beefer springs--is that correct? I was planning on doing that to some of my longsprings too. How do they work for you?

Yeah, they are rivets. They hold the springs in there really well and they are strong. I have had little problems with them so far. you just have to have the trap set evenly, teh dog is right where its suppose to be, cause when you mor the springs inwards, it may set the trap off. some filing and bending would fix that.

We have alot of sand here in upper Michigan and bedding a LS is definitly faster than a coilspring.I use the 3-n victor after using about every make and model of coilspring and am not going back.I could see where they would be a pain if working in heavy clay areas ,we do have some of that here but thank god not a lot.I caught my first coyote up here 30+ years ago in a no.4 newhouse, which at that time had the reputation of being among the best coyote steel on the market. Then the fur boom exploded and LS's were considered outdated and you were'nt considered a trapper unless you jumped on the band wagon and used the latest coilsprings with all the fancy jewelry. After doing it for years I went back to just a simple long spring and love them.

Could someone explain the base plate and lamination? What are the benefits?

  • the wider the trap jaw surface the less chance of foot damage.
  • the stronger jaw reduces jaw flexing and prevents the jaw from popping out of the frame.
  • the base plate strengthens the frame and allows for a chain hookup near or in the center of the base.
  • allows for the release of non targets unharmed
