i boil water with walnut hulls and dye my traps that way every year. this year i want to catch fox so do i need to wax my traps to make them odorless or are they odorless after there dyed. i thought wax just helped the trap not get rusty.

you are right about the wax just HELPING to prevent rust. in PA, your unwaxed traps WILL rust in a short period of time. I believe that rusting objects have a smell, and that when that smell is placed close to a bait smell, causes some fox to become extra wary.

when I first started, I didn't wax my fox traps. my success improved a LOT after I started waxing them.

I've never read where people wax traps after speed dipping. Is this ever done?

Speed dipping is a trap preparation process in itself....you do it early....and let em hang outside in a shaded area...they'llbe ready on opening day...good as gold....but dipped traps tend to get sticky in warm weather..regardless....with my limited arsenal....I boiled my dirty traps and tried to wax em (mid-season) wax just don't adhere very well to that dip....this is why I quit using dip.....hope this helps

The wax seals and lubricates the trap. It seals the fresh rust smell in, that is what they can smell if not waxed, that is what smells unusual to them. You need to be somewhat cautious that you don't contaminate the wax with odd odors, wax will absorb odors that you may not want.
There is no way I would ever use a petroleum product on my traps again. Their nose will pick that up before they work the set, not all will refuse to work it, but a lot will. It also has the possibility of contaminating the water and soil around it. It only takes one part per million of benzene in water to make it unsafe to drink. Wax for me and most professionals.T.20

do u wax your coon traps too? do coons care about the rust smell? Also, i was just gonna wax all my fox traps, which is about 1 1/2 dozen. how much wax do i need for this.

coons can be caught in unwaxed traps all day long.....2 lbs of wax should get your 1 1/2 fox traps covered if melted in a large coffee can

Insert profound nonsense here

I mainly trap canines, coons wear most of wax off, if it is more than 30% bare I change it for the canine sets, or if it is 10-20% rusty I change it for canine sets.T.20

Wax sure doesn't smell like it, if it did it would not work very well. Carpet is a by product of oil, but it don't smell like it.T.20

Will pure paraffin work?

That is what I have been using since about 1983. Got tired of buying over-priced beeswax from supply dealers. Paraffin is a lot cheaper and can be gotten at any grocery store. This means I can get more if needed-now, not a week or two later if bought from a supply dealer.

Waxing traps does not "seal in" odors. It is only a dry lubricant allowing the parts to move easier. Also, it allows the trap to spring in part frozen ground. Not completely frozen, but where the water in the ground has begun to freeze, but not all is frozen yet.

Unless kids are brought into trapping; trapping dies of old age.
Remember; Rush Limbaugh is always right.

I warm mine up enough to dump out the big chunk and shave the particle filled bottom off every couple years. Then put it back in to melt the rest for waxing. Lynx, is the rosin the same as the stuff O'G sells?
