I dont claim to be a professional hooper, but I have done quite a few,Im sure somone here knows a better way. I hang my hoop on a nail so its about chest or alittle higher,I only open my hoop about 2/3 rds.the size I expect when finished, I usually put a couple hooks in the nose or eye area then the bottom then the sides,If you have strong hands and sharp hooks you can stick em through the hide by hand, I have arthritis in my hands and stick my hookkole before I start. Just lay the hide on a 2x4 and make a hole evry1/2 inch or 3/4 inch. After ya get all your hooks in, You can pull downward and out for your size, Dont get it too tight, have it so the middle of the hide is alittle floppy when ya shake it. Commercial stabilizers work well. But I prefer a 6 ft.piece of cord, tie and s hook in one end then about 14 inches up from the hook make a loop, like atruckers hitch, then clamp on another s hook. You can hook one side then the other, run the loose end through the loop and pull until desired oval shape is reached, then make acouple half hitches and hang it up high, dries faster than boards, I use both though. Hooping takes a little longer but the hides seem to dry faster and u can hoop em whemn the fur is wet. Sorry no video.

Have always started like above..

start with north, then south,
then east, then west.
then north east, and south west and north west, southeast.

then split the differences same pattern, like tightening lug nuts...until the hooks are about 1 in apart.

It helped me to have 3 different sizes of hog rings.....to keep it a nice even size..

I use a pair of pliers to put my hooks thru the hide... done it by hand once and I looked like I'd shaken hands with Edward Scissorhands! LOL

I find on big beaver I don't even need to use a tensioner to get the right oval. Just squash the sides in as you are hooking and tightening and it stays put. Unless you have hoops that are much stiffer than mine. Mine came from MTP.

I do mine like Hup and Mike - I use needle nose pliers as well. Those hog rings are sharp. Pic from last year
