I sell asafoetida that is a tincture, but a strong tincture. Check out my online catalog.

"what is it and what does it do?"

(Its a bit of magic that goes into a lure.)

It is a resin from a tree over in India, or some such place. It is a passion type ingredient used in lure formulations.

Derek, you have that lure and bait making forum and you don't know what asafoetida is and what its used for?

Sounds like kids trying to teach kids.

kyle Kaatz (Kaatz Bro. Lures) carrys the straight powder form of Asafoetida. You may then tincture and extend the product depending upon the length of tincture, tincturing agent used, and amount of agent used.

the passion lure thing always made me wonder, i dont doubt it to be true its just funny how many food lures have it in them, garlic is very close to it in odor of cooked foods, its common in foreign countries to use it in cooking and preserving foods, many cultures consider it to ward off evil or bad spells, others claim it can cure colds, cancer and many others,.

none

For about four bucks a jar, you can get lure made by people whp know what they are doing.
These people have invested their time and money over generations. They have purchased buildings, equipment and utensils. Your chances of making a better lure are slim, and if you did, no one would buy it until it was well proven.
In the meantime, you will make a lot of inferior lures, and miss a lot of fur because of the lure being sub-standard.
If no one had figured it out up to now, or none was available, tinkering might be a good idea, but as things stand, is it really worth it?

A soft answer turneth away wrath.

You are right Terry and quite frankly you can buy lure from a guy like Paul much cheaper than you can make up a batch yourself. It feels good to make your own lure and catch an animal with it, but when you combine it all in a young trapper you are looking for trouble. What I mean is, combine someone who is not proficient at catching coyotes yet because they are new to it, and the same guy is using unproven lures or baits cause he is new to it also, and failure is imminent. Master one before trying to master the other. we all have to walk before we can run.

Otherwise you never know if you are not catching coyotes because of the lure, or because you just flat out haven't figured them out yet.

Sure it's worth it. Your right alot of failed experiments are the result of experimentation. Selling lure is not the only reason to experiment however. Do you have any idea how many lures have come and gone when the maker passed away? Taking time to learn something is never a waste of time. The idea that one man is somehow superior to another, or posseses some sort of magic that only allows him to create a good attractant is silly. There are two kinds of folks making good lures. Those who were taught and those who failed alot learning from mistakes. Usually a combination of both.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Also if you are tempted to buy asafoetida get it from a guy like Paul who has the good stuff. If you buy it from a health food place it is cut with flour and far inferior.

Nothing wrong with playing around with lures and baits, but be forewarned, there is no money in making and selling lures and baits, its an addiction that will drain your bank account , very few will ever make a dime.
If you all look at Paul and all the other lure makers on here and the time /gas they spend traveling to conventions.
You will then understand its a labor of love, just look at the smile on his face when he hands that kid at his table a bottle of rat lure and tells him to have fun this fall!!....B....

lol poor fella is gettin 10 bucks worth of opinions for a 50 cent question lol

waste of time? nah, i don't think so ... and i think it's kind of arrogant to think otherwise ... where does the future come from if you discourage the present???

i got a good grasp on formulation and do a fair share of it myself ... waste of time ... i think not!

you ever took the time to think about how many "junk" lures are actually out on the market today??? just like any other marketable item they're out there!!!

and a lot of folks don't realize it but some well know lures are made by fellas sportin a different name than on the bottles label!!! same lure sold under different labels/names ... but one is always gonna be better than the other ... i'm sure lol that's just human nature and the other is just business ;\)

There are good lures and there are bad lures, but you have to have the fur in any given area to catch it, and when you have a high concentration of fur, you can catch it on anything. You can take the best lure in the world and if the fur is not there your not going to catch it or pull it in from the next county.
If you have any elderly pharmisist around your town, or any of the older type drug stores, they will have asafoetida back on the shelf somewhere.

From an historical point of view, in the writings by Sewell Newhouse of Newhouse trap fame it tells of the early wolf trappers quest to call in wolves. By testing stinky smelling things it was discovered that rubbing asafoedita gum on the trees as a call lure it would bring in wolf packs from long distances. Because of that all of the premiere lure makers of our times used asafoedita in in canine lure formulation. My Dad used it in his early lures but discovered that it was a real skunk caller as well as a wolf caller so in an effort to reduce an over abundance of skunk catches eventually removed it from most of his lure formulas used in early season.
I have personally did testings on asafoedita and it is uncanny how far away a skunk can smell it and come on the run. Ace

Thanks Paul, I'll be getting an order out to ya soon. I don't have any plans of selling anything I make, it's just for fun. We have been making our own gopher goo for years and just going to mess around with some things. I look at making my own lure the same as reloading my own shells or tying my own flies, I do it for personal satisfaction and just enjoy the time doing it. Besides it a good time spent with my boys and maybe a friend will stop by and we can drink a beer or two. It's all about having fun.

'Yup RdFx, the skunks are migrating on the run in my direction from many miles around and it reveals what several pounds of asafoedita in my lured shed can do, the more 'ya got the further they smell it, LOL! Ace
PS-hope they don't get side tracked at some chicken farm!
