What size loop do you all typically try to start with when beaver snaring in the water? I know some situations call for a range of sizes but on average what size loop do you normally use?

Oh, any I mean during the fur season, when your not necessarly trying to avoid otters.

Is that a round 8" loop Buzz or a tear drop shaped 8" wide 10-12" tall loop?

roughly 8 - 10 inches ... nothing is ever always though \:\)

the first two pics are set with a big loop for otter avoidance ... the second pic really shows how well a snare can blend in \:\)

last pic was set up for otter on this crossover ... but ended up taking several of both beaver and otter

depends on the situation and location. if i'm in a new spot and have reason to believe there may be some hawgs in there then i'll make a loop up to 12", but usually its right at 10".

Just to let you know possum, you took a picture of absolutely nothing but sticks and grass in that second picture. There is no snare in there...

For water sets - about 9", dry sets - 8 1/2". I'll go larger for those real hogs. That's with a round loop. Snare length is 42", with enough 5' extensions added to reach an anchor point.

For me 6 inches is all the loop I ever set in open water. Dead center in the run. Bottom of the snare about 1 inch under water.
I have killed more ADC beaver with this set than any other.
4 foot snare with 4 foot extension. I like small non relaxing locks.

My loops are 10.125 inches in diameter along the horizontal axis - lol.

I don't change this during fur season because its illegal to use a snare for taking otters in NC. What I do is change from snares to 330s, and then there's no problem.

When I first started snaring beaver around 1979 or 80, I used a 9-10" loop with 3/32 cable. My loops are much smaller now and I don't use 3/32 for anything except tie-offs or disposible stakes. All my beaver snares are 1x19-5/64....I have never lost a beaver once caught and have used the 1x19-1/16th a number of years with much success.

I still do use a few 7x7 cables, 3/32 dia. With them I use about a 9" loop in a tear drop shape, but my main staple is
1 x 19-5/64 and 1/16th with a smaller more round loop and a fast lock.
