I know there a lot of different ways trappers go about catching coons.. what are some of your favorites? I jus go along streams and make cubbies and bait with fish oil...

Gizz getzer, PVC pipe with jack mackrel inside, Bucket sets with a salmon head inside. My 2 favorite lures are hardcore coon by wildlife research and procoon.

Pocket sets. Best bait I've used is Rich Kaspar's.

I also like snares for dryland sets.

i know you water trappers are gonna all say pocket set, which is effective on coon, but i catch more and larger coon with on land bucket 220 sets baited with dry cat food and fish oil. swear by it, especially if your in an area with tons of corn fields

I'm a novice water coon trapper, I'm curious as to why more people don't use "slap and go" sets or "smear sets" in the water.

Are you trying not to miss the mink? The smear sets are faster to make. Give me your thoughts?

Doug, if you didn't care about catching mink and yotes in the water would you still dig pockets? Or would you use more smear sets?

Taking a sticky bait, smearing it against a rock/bridge wall/vertical bank, and setting your trap in the water in front of it.

I use pocket sets pvc pipe shoved in the bank and a set thats called a shelf set you take a
shovel and shave the bank down till you have a shelf then take
your trowel handel and punch a hole with it squirt fish oil
in it and shove a film canister with lure or bait in it next to it and just set your trap.
If you put your holes high enugh it will take alot of rising
water and still take coon. For dry land I like coni boxes and dirt hole sets and cubbie sets too.

You can take the boy from the farm but you cant
take the farm from the boy.

Season totals so far.

coons 51.
coyotes 11.

Slap set or smear set fast and easy and on to the next creek. Coon trapping is not rocket science, just hard work. Any ole fish will do, no need to get crazy with fancy stuff. Fish or fish oil.

Trench pocket set. Prepaired fishy/sweet bait, and 4 0z. of one of my lures in a pint of fish oil or crayfish oil. Dig pocket deep and bed trap deep. Trench gives coon no options but the trap pan for foot placement, deep pocket keeps coon working until caught, deep trap avoids flipped traps and produces better pad catches, use of a lot of different odors that drive coon crazy stop every coon that passes. I have used practically every coon set over the years (fish stick, smear set, 220 trails, snares, buckets, cubbys) and none have been as efficient as the trench pocket. Coon trapping is my livlihood for four months of the year. I had to develope a set that produces the most coon in the shortest amount of time.

I know you sell a video Dave, but can you elaborate more on this trench pocket? I'm having a hard time putting the image in my head.

Dave's video is worth watching.

With the slap set I do have my fair share of flipped traps. I imagine a lot of it is the coon fiddling his way up looking for the smell of the food source and using his front paws. moving loose things. Even a decently bedded trap can get coon flipped.

Deeper water not such a big deal, shallower water it does happen. Sandy or rocky bottoms are the worst, muddy bottoms not so much of a problem.

I like to use fish, alot of times you'll snag a mink or two in pockets using fish.

This is a set I learned from Itrap for water sets for coon where there aren't any banks or vertical surfaces to put a pocket or a smear set. I caught a ton of coons in it one year in a drainage ditch that was almost dry with wide open flat spaces between the water and the vertical banks. I caught a lot of doubles.

Picture a baseball diamond with home plate, first, second, and third bases. Home plate is right at the water's edge. Put a stick in at home plate and each of the bases. Home plate, and first and third base sticks are for guides. Put a smear bait on 2nd base stick. Itrap told me to use a fish head, but I had a lot of luck with a smear bait made out of marshmallow paste, vanilla, anise, and honey. Drive the 2nd base stick in deep and they'll keep working it because it is too sticky to get off. Put a trap between home and 1st, and between home and third. Put them on drowners that angle out to guide the coon away from 2nd base, in left and right field, if you will. This setup takes less time to make than 2 pockets on drowners, and I can't tell you how many times I've caught doubles on it. I bet if I put a trap right in front of 2nd base, where the bait is, I could get triples pretty regular.
