I used to be a big fan of a head shot. Impact = lights out right? Ive recently put the brain buster in the bag as a secondary target. I realized that its just not as effective as a round through the heart/lung. And here is my reasioning behind it. I have seen plenty of head shots, with the recipiant still breathing, 4 of which are still alive and walking around. One only lost 2 weeks of work when a bullet went in by his nose, and out behind his ear. One got blown off his bar stool with a .308 10 years ago and still functions relatively well. The other 2 were under the chin and out the forehead, and you would never know it except for the glass eye. So I gotta think about my own bullet placement on an animal I am hunting. Looks like center mass in the vidals wins. What are your thoughts?

Nothing beats a double lung shot! Bow gun or euthanasia fluid!

Mike I'm glad to see you questioning your thoughts on how you do things and you make some good points but in a trap I'm stickin with the head. Vinke is right and they don't do the double lung for a reason.Kasey do you have one of those bow guns? If you do could you tell us more about it and your use of it? I like new tools and looked at them years ago and have't pulled the trigger.

carbon monoxide I think is the best if you have it and are set up for it. I have shot myself in the foot a few times but not doing this. I would also recommend if you are going to do it do it in the privacy of your own property. Even though this euthanasia is accepted as a humane method it doesn't look it to the people who want to think different and it doesn't look good on video.
Rob Erickson I'm sure was the first to tell me 15 years ago or so always do things believing you are being video taped. Today everyone has a video in their pocket and are dying to use it and post it somewhere.

Well, lets see, CSI Miami, CSI New York, CSI Las Vegas, NCIS, Bones, Body Of Proof, Criminal Minds, and these are only the shows I watch. I can't imagine the doctor and hospital shows that I don't watch. The realism is getting better and better and these are human corpses. By now, animals shouldn't bother anyone.

Oh, I forgot, animals are more important than your loved ones. Anyway, Happy MOTHER'S DAY!

With most of the things I'm hunting I like the bigger target. I've seen people take nuisance deer with a head shot and I don't think I'd risk missing. I'm all about the lung/heart shot.

But that's me. If I was confident I wouldn't miss I'd go for the head shot. Maybe if I used something besides iron sights I'd feel different.

Matt

What is your prey? It sounds like your comparing two legged critters to the four legged types.

The measure of a man is what he will do when he knows he won't get caught.

When hunting, I like a head shot if they are close. If not, I go for the heart. Last year I had a 10 pt. about 25 yards and tried the spine shot for the first time. He dropped like a rock smile If its a skunk it goes behind the shoulder. But not while in a cage.I've never had them spray with that shot, yet.

Have done a few groundhog heads with a .17HMR that drives tacks. But only here in the neighborhood. Don't want them running under the shed. Neighbors call me "Deadeye."

I finally realized we we talking hunting not in a cage. I mostly do the vitals shot because they are not going far and it allows me more room for error. Skunks because I have much lees spraying than head shots. If I don't want it taking a step I like the head.

Phil, sorry to hear one of your eyes died. Maybe it's just wounded, try glasses.
