Do you take off the rubber before dye and wax?

I didn't.

I had thought about taking them off but then decided that I wanted the rubber and the frames for it to all have the same scent and finish as the rest of the trap. Plus the wax will seal any crevice around them anyway.

The process will not hurt the pads.

I never removed the pads, I did however experiment with putting small cut pieces of cardboard inside the closed jaws prior to waxing a few times. Then used the waxed cardboard for fire starters in my wood stove. After determing there didnt seem to be any advantage in that procedure I just waxed them as usual without the card board insertions.

You should scrape off the wax from the open contact face area of the pads and the creases in the rubber after the traps are cured.I used a butter knife. If not, it may prove to provide some lubrication to the surface area.
