I have not used one but I am interested in trying one this year on Skunks. I have seen it done on a Wendt video. What are you guys using for the pole itself? I assume most are handmade and I have a couple ideas in my head but surely some here have tested a couple designs over the years. I see someone makes one but they seem abit too short for my liking.

Wall-mart sells an extendable pole that screws into a paint roller. Maybe $15 !

Work great, and cheap !!

THANK YOU. Thats going to be worth a try. I think I/ll make mine alittle longer, however. I supose it gets easier with practice but what lengths are people using?

I hope I'm not high jacking this post but Where do you get syringes with the big diameter needles for making these? The needles are like 16 guage or so right? The only needles I have found were like 22 guage and they bent or broke too easily. Thanks. Dan

I'm a diehard skunk fanatic. I highly recommend the all aluminum syringe system...they are spendy, but I've been through all the "homemade" styles and the metal one is the best IMO. For a pole...Harbor freight has a light changing pole that telescopes. Very nice and sturdy, not whippy and it gives you a 16'+ reach that goes down to a 4' pole. Cost is about 20 bucks.

Top it off with 1" 16g needle (available at most feed stores, Coastal farm supply, Wilco etc) and 10 cc of acetone injected behind the front leg or into the neck notch (where the neck meets the chest) and you have it.

OK so this is a different style than ADC put out? I/m guessing your talking about the aluminum needle holders that you can but from trappers catalog placed onto the pole you get from Harbor freight? Do you find not having a plunger control like ADCs model is a con?

I got the aluminum machined head, the extedable paint pole from walmart, the acetone from walmart, the needle,16 ga 1 1/2 inches long from the local farm store. The machined head accepts the syringe. The needle does not break off with the machined head. Think you will like it a lot.
If you want to make your own possumskinner had a good post with an inside plunger also. you should check that post out. Tom

Hi Calvin....I tried other versions of homemade skunk poles trying to save a few bucks. The problems...plungers would snap off, needles would bend, end where the needle threads on would break off...naturally, this is at the worst possible time, miles from the truck and the only day you forget a spare whatever it is....LOL.

My all metal syringe has gone 4 years now without an issue...and I expect another 100 more out of it. It was a spendy addition to the gear, but something I wouldn't be without....now that I have had one, I consider it indispensible. You can get by with cheaper gear (I use some Dukes)but if you want "bullet proof" gear...this is the way to go IMO.

Here's a pic of it. The dirty looking syringe on top (still working) went through 2 seasons already. Not bad for a buck. It cost me way more in needles alone with homebuilt ones

OK, that looks like the unit Cumberlands sells in their catalog. I have to go down there soon, anyhow(fairly close by). Do you remeber where you got that one? Thank you.

Where do you buy syringes? I don't think they're easily available around here. Or maybe it's because I'm qutie a bit younger, and they're more likely to suspect me of drug use than trapping, I think.

Hammilton..I don't think anyone will worry you'll stick a 12cc 1" 16 g into your arm. To my way of thinking....they are about like a marinade injector...LOL. The junkies use smaller stuff.

Most any feed store, farm supply store will have them. They don't keep them locked up etc.

TLC, I take it the Harbor Freight extenda pole threads onto the aluminum syringe adaptor?
I'm a firm believer in quality.

Doesn't this set up still give you the problem of acutally pushing the skunk around, VS an internally pushed syringe?

I've had issues with the plunger not wanting to dispense the acetone.....keep pushing and pushing and pushing.......the skunk all over the place.....IMHO, it's far better to simply stick the skunk one time and dispense the plunger internally.....I don't have this system, but sure want it......

Oh 12CC??? WOW. 16 guage is pretty big, but I bet it's been used.

12CC probably hasn't. That's huge.

How much acetone do you add to that??

Bristleback...yes, the light changing pole threads on directly to the aluminum syringe. It's "standard" painter's/broom head threading.

I don't have any problems with pushing the skunks around. You just put the coned part of the syringe against the target area and slowly push. The needle just slips into the skunk as you push. When it bottoms out it starts injecting. Then just slowly walk away backwards. I normally catch them in legholds and they are usually either pulled back at the end of the chain or just standing there. A few are riled and you have to move slow....get the right positioning on by circling and watch out for that "pink eye hole"...LOL.

I've had a few that I just slowly pushed to the ground or end of the chain during the injecting, but the majority just kind of stand there.

I've found 10 CCs of acetone in the 12 CC syringes works about 100%. I've had maybe 2 that I gave a second dose to. The most important thing is to use the correct size needle. Too short...won't get into the lungs...too long you run the risk of bending. Same with gauges...16 seems best...18 bends real easy.

It's also critical to get them in the correct place...you don't want to hit the shoulder blade. You have to be calm. Heck..the first 10 skunks I ever poled my hands were shaking real hard. Some guys bungee jump for an adrenaline rush....me... I pole skunks...LOL.

After the first 50 or so...you get so it is no big deal. But...I still have a complete change of clothes and enough hydorgen peroxide, baking soda and dishwashing soap (in a plastic tray) along with a towel to strip down and give myself a de-skunking. I had one last year that let loose and nearly got me. If it hadn't been for the long pole I'd have been perfumed real heavy. As it was....just got a bit of mist... and that as any trapper knows just smells "good"....LOL.

the style of syringe pole i build has an internal plunger ... poke needle in and push the plunger not the critter

as far as broken needles or syringes ... nope ... not with this very effective cheap homemade version ... unless you are doing somethin terribly wrong!!!

adrenaline huh ... my skunk pole is only 3 foot long wink shocked grin
