Rock Set

Many trappers use rocks as a backing for their sets. The thing I have noticed is they tend to use much too large of a rock. A large rock that the animal cannot move after it is caught may result in a broken leg when the animal wraps the chain and trap around the rock.

My rock set is a bit different than most, because I like to use baseball to grapefruit sized rocks but no larger. My rock needs to have one side that is flat so it cannot be rolled over by a pawing fox or coyote. I also like my rock either white, light gray or orange for added eye appeal, but any rock will do. I always chop out my trap bed and bed my trap solidly before I place my backing (for flat and post sets) or dig my hole (for dirtholes). After I have my trap bedded I position my backing or hole so that the dog of the trap is at the 1 o’clock position. (For foxes I like the trap right up next to the backing, for coyotes I like it 3-4 inches farther back.) After I have my rock in position I cover my trap with dry dirt and blend it in.

I have two ways of making finalizing this set. One is to take a small piece of bait or fur and stick it under the rock so just a little piece sticks out toward the trap. Then I may add some lure if I used fur, but if I use bait I do nothing else. The other way to finish this set is to punch a hole with a stake right at the base of the rock in front of the trap. I then put lure (usually curiosity or food type) in the hole. (If I used curiosity lure I give a squirt or urine on top of the rock.)

This is a very simple, very quick set to make, has low theft rate and will pile up the foxes for you.

Chair? Did he mean the chain? How long is your chain set-up, Mike traps2?

I fixed my spelling mistakes \:\)

trap swivel - 1 link of chain (double loop) or 2 links machine chain - box swivel - 1 link double loop or 2 links machine chain - then finish with a box swivel.

I rig them short and rig the end swivel so I can use the traps for water sets on drowning wires.

Just the way I was taught to rig them. I never had any problems with them rigged that way, and as I said this way the serve double duty on the water line as well \:\)

Yep, I've used a lot of rocks too...very natural.
I learned from John K. Smith one of his "secret rock post sets", that he used to catch a lot of fox in the bounty days.

My favorite flat set is a grass tuff, or similar object, with a pile (several) fresh droppings up against it. No lure or urine. This is set along a travel way.

On dried droppings, I rehydrate with rain water, in a glass jar.

I will sometimes use some gland lure and/or urine at this set during fur season but not when doing ADC spring/summer coyote work. ;\)

I like an off color piece of wood with urine and or gland. Anything that sticks out like white birch or a small piece of chared wood. Size wise is between the size of a fist or two.

Yeah, haven't heard anyone mention charred wood. I use it.

Yeah Billfrank...that's a good one! How big of a wad do you ball up?

Ever use the burnt hide one? I use a piece of dried deer hide tacked down...nothing like the smell of burnt hair! ha! \:\)

I use it for remakes, Smooth out the catch circle and find a good clump of grass 12" or so tall and dig it up and "plant" it in the middle of the catch circle. I then with a squirt bottle of urine ready set the grass on fire and let it burn for a few seconds and put it out with a couple of mists of urine.Make flat set there using burnt grass as a backing.

We thought for sure you were going to tell us that you "just put a little pinch between your cheek and gum" to rehydrate.

I do mine similiar to miketraps2 in most cases. I normally use a gland lure under the edge of the rock. But I don't always use a rock, I use whatever is close by to grab. Normally a rock or chunk of wood. Location is the biggest factor, you need to be right on the spot.

Rocks are harder to move and can't be dragged off or picked up and carried away, like a piece of wood.

Any trappers making flat sets out there and want to post them?
I'm sure we'd all like to see them, as well as the results!
