Most importantly..
Are you going to be trapping a river? Pond?

Do you plan on doing other things with your boat?

I run a 18' Jon Boat with a 40 Mag Mariner, with a tiller. I spend most of my trapping on the Mississippi, I wish it was a V bottom most of the time, as slapping the choppy water gets old..

I wish it was bigger, and wider. However, I am happy with what I got, as it is WAY BETTER then nothing.

Overall I spent 1800 for boat, motor, and trailor. All bought used, boat/trailor I spent 700, motor 1100. I love the trim/tilt feature on the motor, gets me in pretty shallow water.

Nice boat but you couldnt get it within 100 yards of where I put my boat in the water let alone in to any of the sloughs I trap.

I have two rigs 1 is a 17 foot canoe that works great and I can get more traps and stakes in it then i can set in a day.

Rig 2 is a 12 foot alum boat with a 6 horse johnson also a very good rig bought it at a auction for 100 bucks prob 10 years ago. I have a wooden deck that I can put over the midle and front seat

I'll be trapping a big river with it mostly and then taking it fishing in the summer every once in a while. No sloughs or any of that stuff where I plan to trap.

I know a lot of you guys got more money to burn than I do but DANG!! $8,000 for a boat to run traps and fish out of "every once in a while".

I got a 14' ,1970 somthing, Alumacraft with a 1965 Johnson 5.5hp motor. It gets me up the river, across the lake. Room for a pile of traps, critters and one of my kids. I also have a 17' Grumman canoe full of dents but doesnt leak. Got it last year for an otter, beaver and a small grey.($150)

From my expereince you are going to wish you didn't have that steering console taking up room in the boat. You can manuever a lot better in small spaces with a tiller too, especially if there is current.

I agree, thats why I went with the tiller, just make sure you get an open floor plan and you will be happy. I wish I only paid 8000 for mine lol. I duck hunt alot out of it and fish so I can justify it.

I had my boat custom built to meet my needs. I needed storage. Lots of storage. I had me a 15x44 Alweld built. I had a floor put in it, I had a 5' gun box put on the left side, I have on one seat in it, and it is the motor man seat across the back and it has dry storage in it. I have a 16" front deck which is set 4" below the top rail. I had two pedestal seat mounts put in, one on the motor man back box and the other dead center 4' from the front. I take the front seat out unless I am bream fishing. I have my passanger sit on the gun box. I also had them move the front tie down eye to the very front so I would not rip it off running up on the rocks on the red jetties. I put a 30hp Tohatsu on it. I have got 32 mph out of it empty and most of the time 24-25 mph loaded. I will haul the fur.

Here is a side pic of my boat taken by a buddy watching 2 of my babies and me run line. Not a real good pic, but it was taken with a cell phone. I still had the Yamaha 25hp on at this time. I now have 30hp Tohatsu on it.

You can see how much room I have in the floor. The ice chest is a 140 qt igloo. You can also see I catch all kinds of cats. The ice chest is full of catfish also. The weights were 4o something, 58# and 60#. You can see how I have the dry storage boxes in the side and back seat.

Most boat mfgs will build you a boat like you want and if they don't, there is a pile of cutsom boat mfgs down here that will. I thought having a boat built to my spec would cost a lot more than a standard job. I was wrong, I got more boat for less than any package boat deal I could find. I also got the boat sat up the way I wanted it, not what they wanted to sale me.

this is mine ..a 10 foot jon light super easy to get around no trailer needed, one person throw it up top and move on to the next spot. plus it will float in 8-10 in of water. it get used and abused all year round from ducks in the fall to trapping to fishing in the summer. Think i paid somewhere around 75$ for it and a 6 horse motor...

This is my boat. Don't use it for trapping yet but maybe one day. Its a 12ft jon boat that I built a few years back. Cost about $200 for all the materials and took a couple weeks to build.

BigElk, how's that deck work out for you? I have a boat lined up for me come spring that I want to maybe put a deck onto as well.

The boat is also a 12ft alum. It's got sort of a semi-v hull (1st third of the boat). My little bit of trapping $$ this year is going to be used to buy a 4 stroke outboard for it.

With the deck, is your boat stable enoufgh to stand on?

Thanks.

-Skunkly-

ps: where in central WI are you located? I'm just outside of Wausau.

im also from mn. se. and the only river that could handle that wonderful boat is the mississippi. thats more boat than you you need. id get a grumman sport boat or freighter canoe and a air cooled outboard 5 or 6 hp is enought . the sport boat will handle about 900 lbs. the freighter 1100 lbs. both boats are very stable and maneuverable . the boats can be bought new or used for under $1300 . and the outboards new for $600 to $1600 .
