I collected a bucket of white acorns from my yard yesterday and chopped them up in a blender. It worked real nice, and smells great. It's in the freezer now. Can anyone advise me on how to formulate it into an oil or liquid for a deer hunting cover scent or trapping lure? Is the acorn scent an oil? I was thinking of extracting it with alcohol and evaporating it down. How would I preserve the product? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Mike, I've been thinking about it. I believe I can extract the oil, but I wonder if I should preserve it with an additive of some kind. I'll post later about how I do the extraction. PM me if you don't see it within a few weeks.

Don't know about the oil. It should be easy enough to extract.
If you shell the acorns, crush them and boil them in several changes of water. Until the water stays clear. You can dry them, and grind to the consistancy of cornmeal, or flower, and make bread, cookies, muffins, ect, ect.
While you experimenting with the oil extract. Give it a try.

Steam distilled is probably the way to go. But before I try that I did some experimenting. I blended some acorns up into a thick shake with water and put it in a plastic bag. It smells real good. I'm going to slather in all over the tree I'll be hunting from today. Should make a good cover scent.

Why not blend with Glycerine

I tried it. It smelled so good I rubbed it over my boots and shirt. Didn't see any deer. Lots of squirrels though.

GaTrapper, is glycerine a preservative?
