I am going to be making some sets tomorrow knowing that there is rain on the way. It seems that every time I trap in the rain, all the dirt clumps up into mud after I pack it inside the jaws, and then the trap doesnt fire. Should I just use polyfill under the pan and then pack the dirt how I normally do? Or should I use some screen pan covers?

thats why i use peat moss. its hard to set or reset traps in mud. especially the freeze thaw routine.

store dry dirt during summer then use it along with peat moss.

why pack inside the jaws? pack the outside of the jaws and sift over the trap. using peat would be your best bet.

i would hope if the animal steps inside the jaws it don't matter if it's packed or not because he's caught.

Can I just bed with moss thats on logs and stuff? And then would I sift a thin layer of dry dirt over top of the moss?

i pack as well as i can with peat/dirt mix inside the jaws. helps stabilize the trap better, and there's no solid then immediately soft spot next to the pan.

go to a hardware store and buy a bale. sometimes it's pretty dry feel for the lightest bale. i have a place i get it from that is already dry as a bone. just open up the package and use.

What the heck are you saying shore trash. LOL

I use peat moss, works well in wet and freeze thaw conditions as Jlordy said. I believe most any brand will use. I use the Canadian stuff as it is made close to us border states and smells better. LOL

no with peat moss you don't have to use pan cover but i do use poly fill. just for when it rains hard it don't wash my cover dirt under the pan.

what i am saying is why pack the inside of the jaws. i know a lot of trappers do it but if the animal steps in between the jaws he should be caught reguardless if it was packed or not. just takes more time to make the set. i just pack dirt around the outside of the jaw in a couple place to bed the trap then throw some already sifted peat over the trap and sift a top layer of dirt.

i ain't saying i am a expert but i haven't had a problem with traps being dug or anything like that.

Another thing, how much dirt do you sift over the trap after you pack the inside of the jaws with peat moss? 1/4"?

i sift just enough peat and dirt over the trap to cover it. if you in windy conditions you may want more. the wind rarely blows hard enough to blow the dirt off my sets.

you can get peat moss at most any nursery/landscaping place or lowes if you have one near by.

Bought a big bale of that Candian stuff at Lowes for $9.00, must weigh 50lbs, works great.
