I've cut off two skunk tails while fleshing recently. How much does that hurt the value?

I was afraid of that. Both tails are buried under a pile of hay in a hay set now.

Not sure if sewing them back on is going to help. It will if you can slide it by the grader or buyer. But if the buyer catches that the tail is sewn on, he is probably going to dock you in price.

If the tail comes unsewn in the dressing process, the dresser may or may not recover it. If it is recovered and sewn back on, it is still a sewn on tail. Which doesn't fly with a lot of people selling dressed skunks.

What is the skunk market? Are they just used for hats or something?

The market for skunks is what I call the tourist/craft market.

Some of them are used for hats. Some for wall hangers. Also used for gloves and other projects.

For making a skunk hat, it takes more than 1 pelt, but you only need one tail. So there is a market for pelts without tails. But there are a lot of skunks available at NAFA for $2.00 or less that can be used for that purpose.

If you've got a skunk with a nice long stripe and a good tail -it is worht $6.00 to $8.00. If you've got a skunk with no stripe or no tail - it is worth less than $2.00.

wissmiss, this is off topic, but is it solely because of the name that skunks are no longer used in the fur garment industry? Back before the labeling laws they were sold as American sable, and a "star" skunk was big money.

I don't think it is just because of the name. Probably has a bit to do with the perceived notion that there is a smell associated with them even when they are made into a garment.

I also think that they don't get promoted enough by the auction companies. For example, when you go to a NAFA sale in Toronto, the skunks are listed in the wild fur catalog along with squirrels and possum and badger - the stuff they call "The Zoo".

But the sample bundles are not of the warehouse floor. They are on a rack which is stashed away in one of the coolers. If you want to look at the skunks, you have to ask some one to bring the rack out and then as soon as you are done looking at them, they put the rack away. Something about "the smell bothers the ranch mink buyers".

Probably other reasons as well that I am not aware of.

I find it best to flesh the tail towards the head on skunks.
