After watching a few videos and reading some books I see a lot of holes that are about 7 to 8 inches wide, I personally have never made a hole that big mine are usually 4 to 5 inches wide just big enough

No certain size, if im satisfied i set the trap. Needs to have some eye appeal from a distance though.

The first two pictures are of the same set. It is just at the high tide line. The third picture is a foot or two below the high tide mark. I use either herring or salmon heads for bait. I find where there is a seep and scuff a little puddle with my boot; the seeping water has enough flow to keep it from freezing up. I use either a naturally occurring hole for my pocket or build one with a few flat rocks.

I like my pocket to be just wide enough to put a 1.5 cs in the actual pocket. I like the pan to line up with the lip of the pocket, or maybe the whole pan just inside the pocket. I probably miss some coon this way but feel like I get enough and most if not all the mink. I use no pan tension and catch most mink by the front foot, some by a back foot. The back foot mink are probably in the pocket, past the trap, working on the bait on the nail and plant a back foot on the pan Never back footed a coon with this setup, and get most mid pad on a front foot. I pin my fish in the back of the pocket, which is usually 6-12" deep. I run a jaw guard on one side of the pocket, more rarely to the channel side of the trap. Basically set it up so a mink entering the pocket HAS to go over the pan to get in.

The high pockt like Randy is better for coon and will take mink as well, but is prone to miss some mink IMO.

This is a remake but gives an idea of trap placement. That stick poking out is just a little root and is not serving any guiding purpose.

Why? I have never had a trap pulled and flipped, ever.

mine look pretty much like johnsd16's, but I would have removed that stick. otters will miss some mink with that rock on the right, in my mind. it is a natural crawling spot for them to get over the trap. it isn't that they are trapshy, it is just their nature to be huggers. also, his pocket is so high that it will allow many big buck mink to get 1/2 way in by jumping over the trap with their front feet, and the back feet will stop just shy of the trap. with a lower ceiling it will help to limit this.

women like me because I rarely wear underwear, and when I do it's usually unusual.

i guess im not setting for rats or mink. if i pick one up its fine but a coon will pull that trap out if it feels the chain in my experience.

All of my pockets have the trap chain just laid out like all of those pictured. I never had a trap pulled out by the chain. I twist my trap down in the mud so it is stable but I don't worry about the chain.
