You can catch a coyote. They ain't magical animals. Just make sets where they will find em easy. When you flesh one start at the bottom. (base of the tail) Stuff builds up there if you start at the head. Go from the bottom to the head. Have to go a bit hard on the back and real easy on the belly. Belly is thin and tears easy.

Same way I flesh coyotes. By starting at the base of the pelt you elimanate all that membrane build up that occours when you start from the top. More then one way to get the job done.

Im not sure what you mean. I start at the bottom doing only 4-6 inchs at a time. Pushing knife in a staight line from head to tail only just the bottom few inchs.i increase the amount im pushing as i go toward the head. I do the back first. Then the front legs. The throat chest is next. Then pull the hide up the beam and do the back legs. Belly is last starting at the bottom
Sounds a lot more complicated than it is.

I am no computer wiz so I will try to get a pict of the fleshing beam I built this year on here. I have never been big fan of the wooden beams where you swing them out of the wall and end up pushing all night long to flesh. I built a beam that sits on the floor at about a 45 degree angle that you can straddle and pull towards you like rowing. It is a lot less tiring and a lot easier on the back! I built the base out of old wood and the beam is 6 inch PVC. I turned a piece of ash out of the woodpile to make the tip. It works really well. A really nice thing about it is you can throw a bloody coyote on it and all you need is a wet paper towel for cleen up and it is is good as new. The only problem I have run into is with really big coons. they are so wide at the base that if you are not careful they will slid a little from side to side. All in all really easy to build and very cost effective.
I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

I got a tip this year . Take a t spoon at the neck and slide it under the membrane then using the knife as a guide cut a line down the membrane. Do this till you have 4 sections, then flesh each section. You won't have any tissue balling up on you. This really makes fleshing a yote simple.

I hope the sitting down thing works for you because I know It would never work for me. You need the use of your shoulders arms and back to get the job done. Sitting down your pretty much relying only on your arms. If your sitting down how are you going to be able to move the hide up the beam and keep It In place to continue fleshing?

The beav, I assume you are replying to my post. I am not sitting down. The base of the beam is sitting on the floor. The beam is up off the floor at an angel. I straddle the beam standing up while I am fleshing and pull towards my body. Lots of muscles in the back shoulders and arms are used. You simply slide the fur on the pvc. You never have to reposition the fur. you simply reach down with one hand and rotate the beam (pvc). The beam is long enough to accommodate any coyote. I am sorry I was not more clear in my earlier post. If I can figure out how to get a pict on here it will be a lot more clear.

Several years ago I came up,with a way to take the jarring to my arthritic shoulders and wrists that occur during the fleshing of the red membrane off the coyote. I take a soda spoon and starting at the neck, insert the handle under the membrane but above the leather and slit the channel it made open. I do this the full length of the pelt in maybe 4-6 strips. You can either remove each section of membrane with the dull edge of your fleshing knife or use a pair of fish skinning pliers to pull the membrane off the leather. Once you break the "hoop" formed by the membrane, coyotes flesh very easy and takes me less time than writing this. Spoon handle Slit Channel after slitting Multiple channels slit Removing membrane with pliers

Excellent information. For those not using this in house method of posting, if you use an outside photo hosting site like photobucket we can not use the post in the Archives. Thank you Mike for taking the time to repost these. Tom

Is this the new way pictures are going to be on this site?
I don't like it, I want to see them NOW.
But then again, I hate those threads that are 2' wide because of pics. I have no idea what you're talking about. There were links to photos, then someone posted the photos. I haven't seen a 2' wide thread because of a pic. Could you point one out for me?

Seldom, thank you for sharing this. It certainly makes a lot of sense to break the membrane up into narrow strips and deal with them one by one. Having a clean cut between the strips appears to eliminate the tough transition areas that are otherwise hard to deal with, at least for me. I will be looking for a suitable spoon or other implement to try your method. Thank you again. Coondagger how old are you? Do you any copies of Fur-Fish-Game, Trapper Predator Caller, or International Trapper Is there many coyotes in area your trapping. The coyote you did get how did you catch it. You look like you did great on coons.
Bury me with my guitar, a bottle of Jack Daniel, some MB 550s, and lots of money just in case you can take it with you!
