I caught a possum in minn last november that was about the size of a red squirrel...very tiny....would possums have more than one litter per season or be so late that this thing was so small? also would he have lived thru winter or his littermates? just baffled me to see such a tiny critter so late in fall

byrd, you lucky devil; I am one of the foremost authorities on opossums anywhere. ( Except Australia )

Opossums have two litters a year. And they can have up to 16 young, about half of which will survive long enough to get run over.

In states like yours and mine, a really bad winter can kill 90% of the opossums. ( Southerners just can't handle global freezing )

Would your opie make it through the winter? I doubt it. ( But then I didn't think your state would go for gay marriage either )

Adult opossums, if held by the tip of the tail, are helpless. Not so with the little guys. They will end up on top of your hand.

P.S. The opie isn't too smart and neither am I. Kind of made for each other. Ask anyone!

I have read that they only have one litter per year.
but I think they can have two. I also have caught some very
small opossums in Oct-Nov. some smaller then a cotton tail rabbit.
And as far as litter size? well I got one just last week, in my hen house,
that had 17 tiny opossums in the pouch. that's the most I have heard of.
You can't see them all in the pic.

I now pronounce coonlove to have the unofficial world record for opossums. ( I'm guessing to make it official, we are going to need something besides "coonlove" )
