I was skinnin a coon without goggles and was rushing ended up with juice and blood in my eye. So, I call the doctor but, since it's Sunday I had to go to the E.R. three hours, six shots, and $100 later I learned a valuble lesson.

Nope just hit a vein or something down in the neck. Won't need to wear anything really for this year now.

Just be glad it isn't 45 ago, I got 14 rabies shots in the stomach. Felt like they injected gasoline.

One in each butt cheek ,two in right thigh ,one in left they called it rabies imogloxin or something; all I know they had like a three inch needle. The sixth was the actuall vaccine. I gotta go back four more times for the vaccine.

Buzzy I weigh 195 the cost of 100 is through insurance. And your day schedule is right that's the four more times. My appologies for lack of detail initially.

I thought there is no rabies danger after the animal is dead?

Well, I weigh 155 and my first visit after a run-in with a bat got me two shots in each glute (immunoglobulin) and one in the shoulder (vaccine), for a total of 5 injections. I then went for all of my follow-up injections which involved a single shot in the shoulder each time. It didn't cost me a dime because the bat was inside of a building and the owners of the building paid for it after they were given a notice by the city's Animal Control Dept. The funny part is that I had to drive 20 miles to the next town with my own personal ice chest to pick up the vials at the health dept. and then personally drive them them to my family Dr. where his nurse administered the injections and they kept the additional vials in their fridge. I kept a box from both the immunoglobulin and the vaccine as a momento. Lucky for me, some of my co-workers gave me the small ice chest with Batman stickers all over the outside of it and a rubber bat on the inside. Everyone got a kick out of it around here. Also, every time I walk into that doctor's office the receptionist still replies, "here's Batman!"

It took 6 injections for me to receive the immunoglubulin, so I don't doubt your count. I also received the first of the rabies injections and the tetanus in that first visit. I do weigh lots more than 195. And my bill came to 3600.

I've been leaked on, spit at, had fluids all over my face, sprayed on, blood from who knows how many animals, and the only time I've ever even had a concern about pathogens of that sort was when I slipped and stabbed my upper for-arm skining a coyote.

And then I went only cause the wivery had a fit at my upper shoulders and back being purple overnight, the Doc gave me a tetnus booster and some freaking horse antibiotics you need a shover stick to get them down with.

I never worried about any of them as they were all way dead, however I do take precautions with fresh dispatchs and never mess with bats.

Guess some Doc's are more concerned about being sure than others LOL,

Ok, I have a question bout this rabbies thing. Not to change or jack a post or nothing;

1) If the rabbies virus dies off quickly after the host is dead, wouldnt the fleas or ticks in some cases still hold the virus?

2) If the fleas and ticks do carry the virus, are they able to transmit it? (I think they can for obvious resons)

3) Also ive been told that if an animal does have the virus and you kill it around there den, its posible to catch this virus around there den area specially through open wounds on yourself.

But if it dies right away, then number three cant be true. Just bein curious.

6 shots? doesnt sound fun at all...I wonder if they'd wait a few hours for some wild turkey to kick in...

how long is a rabies vaccine good for? is it a once a lifetime thing? or every so often like tetnus? or is it everytime a critter takes a chunk out of you?

A Minnesota man just died recently from rabies he received from a bat bite. He knew he had been bitten but he did not feel that the bite had gone through the skin enough to transmit the disease. Once he started having symptoms it was too late and he did not last long after that.Better to be safe than sorry.

Rabies is now known to be an airborne virus as well. A man contracted rabies and died from being in a cave with bats, where there is no sun to kill virus. Ref: NTA Trappers Handbook.

Sounds like you have a bunch of knowledge on this subject. Care to give any insight on how you came by it? Maybe a rabies 101.
