I too have had a lot crap fly off a carcass and hit me in the face more time's than I can count. I quickly learned to keep my mouth shut and turn my head when pulling hard. Also learned where to cut and not too.

Anybody ever have a big ol puss pocket explode on you before??

Last season I run a knife in my hand while skinning a coon. I went to the doc and he wanted me to send the coons head off to get it checked for rabies. I got a tetnus shot while there and I never sent the head off. I just took my chances.lol

I did a search on Yahoo for Rabies and came up with Rabies. com
also CDC came up. So I sent them a question about how long the virus stayed alive in a dead animal. They sent me a confromation that they got my email as soon as they reply.
I will post the Info.

It is my understanding that once the host dies so does the virus or shortly there after. There may be some variables but for the most part this is what I was trained to understand.

According to the CDC, they do not consider contact with blood only an exposure to rabies. The virus is only carried in the saliva and brain and spinal cord fluid. Its not carried in the blood, so fleas and ticks would not be able to transmit it.

well ok, but how often would someone exposed to the virus need a vaccination. for example, you get bit, get the shots...six months later you get bit again...need more shots? what if it was a year later? would you still need more shots? whats the timeline? is it worthwhile getting the shots in advance?

If you have the animal's carcass there's no reason to get a rabies shot. You just have them open up the brain and look at it. That's why doctors always tell you to keep the animal's body.

It sounds to me like the doctors wanted your insurance company's $.

I was attacked by a feral cat, bitten deeply in my finger to the point where blood dripped, and the claws shredded my wrist. I went to the ER and they wouldn't even give me rabies shots, just some antibiotics and a diptheria booster. And I had good insurance.

Maybe they were extra worried about rabies because of your region, perhaps it's active there. But I suspect they just milked your insurance company because they could.

I dug out a den of red fox years ago and at a suggestion by the game warden sold 7 of the 9 pups. I had wanted one for a pet. A guy I sold one to called asking to buy another, seems his had bit him went into convulsions and died. I sent it's head in and they said it had rabies, I gather all of them up and sent their heads in. They came back negative, Health Dept said they didn't want to take a chance. The virus in the brain dies within twenty four hours after the animal dies. Seven of us took the 14 shots, no cure once you come down with it. Either someone volunteers to keep you sedated or it's a rubber room. If you question that a critter has rabies do not shoot them in the head, that's what they need for testing. I was so ticked off I dug the bodies up and went to collect the bounty, Sheriff through me out of the court house. He said the shots were $45.00 a piece and I had caused enough problems. The county commissioner's voted to give me the bounty in the end.
