Any update Murse? I was out of town for thanksgiving in Breckenridge CO, going to get my bait buckets out tonight again and get the camera over them.

Hows everyone else doing with the bait bucket experiments?

Wally

It's going pretty good. I was running long hours alone, and the weather has been interesting to say the least. I pulled a good majority of the line today. I still have 20 coon sets out, and I started to dabble with predators. I'd like to catch a cat or two in the next 5 checks before I go back to work. I have my eye set on a couple. In 7 days the total at the end of the run today was 120 coons, more grinners than I could keep track of, and about 5 skunks. It was a pretty good experience, and I think I've lost about 10 lbs. I really failed at snapping pics this year. It's hard when you're running that many traps to think about much other than keep moving. High of 12 coons on feeders, and I had a couple that have only produced 1. I'd like to keep going every day, but I've got some catching up to do around home. I sold 49 coons skinned to Shane (Rock Creek Furs) on Sunday, and was pleased. The rest I have skinned, and they are being put up.

Just a quick question, how much liquid smoke do you toss in a 5 gal bucket half full of cat food? I think I might not be putting close to enough in them.

Another, are you baiting the dps with cat food and liquid smoke or other bait?

The first time I baited I would put 1/4 bottle per feeder regardless of how much, and then I would just shoot a couple drops in the feeders after that so they associated smoke with food. Yes I ran all of the DPS with just catfood, and smoke. I also would trail fish oil/salmon oil at times.

120 coons in 7 days is a very solid haul!

Murse did you pull all your buckets and traps or are you going to keep baiting and trapping? Sounds like you had a good week

I'm still playing around with about two dozen coon traps. I'm waiting on a cat. I have four checks left. I'm still pulling them in slowly. I have 131 caught as of this morning. Feeders are still producing close to home. I'm just not running the full line anymore. I'll sit down and play around with the catches on feeders at some point. When I get a three day stretch off work, and the weather cooperates I have a couple feeders that haven't hit their potential yet that I will be resetting. I'm going to grind to 200 if it takes me into January. I've just got a couple cats I have my mind set on, and I've set pretty heavy for them in the last three days.

Here's the break down so far. It's pretty lengthy.
1)Feeder on city limits farmstead close by-13
2)Feeder on creek meeting river -10
3)Feeder on open field-2
4)Feeder on tailwaters of pond-4
5)Feeder just off a feedlot-2
6) Feeder on open pond-2
7)Feeder on creek with open trees-1
8) Feeder on old abandoned farm with creek nearby-5
9)Feeder on pond dam-1 (This location I found a YOY coon dead the day before I set. Caught one opening morning. No trauma. Lots of sign, but wondering if not distemper. It was one of my hottest feeders).
10) Feeder off of bridge close to den trees-4
11) Feeder on otherside of road with den trees-2
12) Feeder on open creek-1
13) Feeder on tailwaters of pond-2
14) Feeder on top of pond dam-2
15) Feeder on brushpile behind pond dam -3
16) Feeder on single den tree-1
17) Feeder on brushpile in middle of section-1
18) Feeder on active farmplace-2
19) Feeder in middle of section-7
20) Feeder on active farmplace brushpile-2
21) Feeder on barn of active farm place-4
22) Feeder on single creek-2
23) Feeder on active CRP with creek, and cattle farm-5
24) Feeder on back of pond dam-5
25) Feeder on single creek in timber-3
26) Feeder on single creek-1
27) Feeder where two creeks intersect-3
28) Feeder in grass on tailwaters of pond-3
29) Feeder on abandoned farm with house-10
30) Feeder on creek with active den trees-5
31) Feeder on abandoned farm place with brushpile-8
32)Feeder on golf course-7
33) Feeder on active farm place with brushpile-8

Counting in the lowest catch rates on feeders I averaged about 3.96 coons per feeder (I really wish I would have hit some of the low producing feeders sooner as I don't think those are the only coons that were visiting judging by sign). The highest as of today is 13 coons from one feeder. I had 11 feeders that produced over the average, at 5 coons or more per feeder. I had three feeders that produced over 10 coons.

The coldest day I caught the coons on the feeders was right at O F. They actually seemed to hit harder when we had extended cold, and the temperatures stayed at 20F lows. The feeders that I have caught the most at are generally feeders I have been running longer than others. The catches don't seem to be bother them as you can see some feeders have produced very well, and a lot of them in the same catch circles. The feeders that produced poorly were generally out in the middle of a section with no denning within a mile or located on ponds that the water froze on. I did very well on abandoned farms with brushpiles or den trees close by. Active farms seemed to catch less coons. I have no doubt that some of these feeders haven't caught every coon that was visiting them, but I cut the line 85% after just 7 days out.

Eventually everything must die.

Page 12 shows an 1800 lb bag of dog food he bought, PM him and ask what he got it for, Murse is a good guy and spreads the knowledge of his methods.

He traps a lot of coon this way in a very short amount of time.

Labby we got 1800 lbs for$180. $0.10 on the pound. I bought one bag of original meow mix 8lbs, and a bottle of liquid smoke to catch the coons. My dad provided the feed as a birthday gift. I've spent about $12 on bait.

For the record even if you don't do the feeders catfood, and smoke will catch plenty of coons. Mice also love it which became a factor this year for me.

Murse did you have a feeder you did not feed out of to be the control? Don't take this wrong but you very well could have caught that many coon per stop without all the time and effort of the feeder. LLL

I guess I never thought to do that Larry. I had intended to move traps to areas without feeders, but I quickly found out that running that many traps on a 24 hour check with one guy was quickly wearing. I can see on the locations I only pulled 1-2 coons where I could have done that without the feeders. If you told me I could set a trail in between a harvested bean/corn field on a hedge row with 5 sets no farther than 20 yards apart and pulled 13 coons I don't think that it would have been possible without the feeder there. I think that if I would change anything it would be to place all the feeders on den/brushpile/farmstead locations. That early cold seemed to snuff out quite a few feeders as the coons just weren't running like they had been. All in all it still worked out quite well for me as I've broke even cost wise without 81 coons that are being finished for auction. I think I will still dabble with a few of the local feeders within ten miles of town when I have three days off in a row, and can run two nights on them. I'm going to grind my way to 200 one way or another.

Eventually everything must die.

Just have a couple dozen sets out, and playing around with some of the feeders close to town. Slowing down, and taking a couple more pictures now. Fog had them moving last night. Reset a couple feeders today that I felt should have improved. Hoping for results in the morning.

Coon number 11 off this feeder. I took 16 here last year. Slowly inching up

Coon number 8 off this feeder. I believe I had 15 here last year. It's been slow.

Double here after catching 7 off of it already. The one's trying to hide, and looked small. Ended up being a pretty large boar.

Friends fur shack has kind of been taken over. Going to hate to see them all go in a couple months.

Eventually everything must die.
