Well I thought I had seen just about everything trapping on these sheep and goat ranches but I was fooled once again. I thought getting that three legged yote was going to make things easier but hit another stumbling block. Got a old yote (big track with scar on one toe) and found where it was coming to water and set traps. It totally moved out of that pasture. Found tracks a couple weeks later so set traps and once again moved. Used dirt holes, scent posts and turd sets. Now the tracks have showed up in yet another pasture (pastures average 2,000 acres). I am not getting dug up so I know it is not a scent problem. Just new activity... in a pasture causes it to move. Well I have three piglets about 10 pounds each so going to put in a trench set, Badger hole set and just hang one from the fence. I can not blind set due to sheep and goats and no trail snares. So going to get totally away from any baits or urines and use only natural baits. He/She does not use slides so no fence snares are possible and when the helicopter flies it runs to a chin oak patch and lays down. It has been seen twice from Helicopter. Suggestions please as we are about to start lambing in that pasture.

Since I have no idea, would something it's never seen before, like a collarum, have a chance?

Is calling an option in that area or not?

I usually catch some of the last educated/wise dogs left with several well placed scent posts well blended then covered with grated ( thru a sifter ) cow, sheep, goat, deer or other dried dung found native to that area. Leave a pile of the selected dung as the marking object with the grating all around the area. Dont just cover the trap area. Grate 3-4 feet around the set location.

Never thought of using sheep pellets as a cover/blend item. Will give it a shot. as far as calling every hunter that comes out here calls....

Make your set but use very big loud backing which is sure to spook off the coyote and after 3 days pull this backing away . Some even cover the set with a white 5 gallon bucket for a few days then pull it away . Works well on these set shy coyote for some reason they just dive right in . Only other thing I might do is make blind sets on the trails leading in and out of suspected bedding areas .

The dung odor serves to further short cut the canines ability to distinquish much of anything due to the blending and dispersal of the dried poop. It is a method I developed many moons ago by experimenting with sets and presentations to catch a particular animal or a pair that has been around the ropes a few rounds or so.

Not many I dont catch with this method in doing what I do. I dont know your skill level or experience however you will get results with time practicing this method.

i have caught several dirthole and lure shy coyotes with the foot of another coyote sticking out of the ground where your backing usualy is.i take a rebar stake and punch a hole straight down and just big enough so that the foot fits tite.blending the set in is the most important part of this set and no lure, bait or urine.you need to set as close to the trail as possible.i dont like catching sheep either but one or two bums is better than ten dead lambs

Something else that sometimes works. Make a regular set or one described above. Then bed a trap in front of the nearest wrong or whatever you think they may like to mark. They may get nervous of the set and then attempt to mark something nearby. No lure, urine or anything on it.

Just because something is legal doesn't make it smart.

Bob, I have trapped over 20 years and I catch a world of trap shy yotes but this is not trap shy it is activity shy. If they mark lambs it moves out or if the windmill people come in it moves out. I deal with climber yotes and jumpers regularly(the ones who climb or jumps fences rather than using slides). Just never thought of using dung before but will give it a try.

Pesky will try your method on a set too.

Andy I use coyote feet but I dip them in gland lure, Your saying use nothing right?

You mentioned that he runs to a chin oak patch and lays down. That would be a good ambush site. No calling just sit and wait him out.

It's nice to know that someone else has dealt with climbers/jumpers before. I've told other trappers about them and they look at me like I'm CRAZY! Coyotes can and will do some strange things, especially if they've been pressured hard.

Coyotes are one of the most adaptive animals I have worked with besides, beaver, raccoon and norway rats. They all can challenge you if you do this work long enough and they have had enough things done to them.
