So, as most know I've only been at this business now since Mar. 2011. Since that time we've installed a good amount of bird netting. Till recently I hadn't used any 3/4" net as most of my work was for strict pigeon issues without any small birds on site, or habitat so to speak.

I hope that for anyone who might read this who hasn't done this yet or has mostly installed 2" net that I might save you a few bucks in accounting for labor. Those who are old hats know this already but again, hope it helps those that are new to it, or just getting into bird exclusion.

When you are a sole proprietor or 1-2 man/woman operation your time is sometimes hard to estimate when you start out.

Two major things ramp up the time for install (I do these solo so with a crew of 3-5 maybe not a big issue for you), amount of hog rings and amount of intermediate attachments (the hardware you use to hold your cable against the surface).

These also increase your cost and if you don't use an estimator (like bird barriers online) or have your own system to failsafe yourself, you can lose cash on hardware needs and on labor in the end.

When I went from 2" netting to my first 3/4" netting I had to do two 85ft long runs that were 10 feet wide, with outer strips as well each 2ft by 85ft long on a wood beam structure.

I didn't at the time have a pneumatic or cordless ringer option and after 2 days of this install my forearms looked like popeye's but felt like they should be amputated to reduce pain and swelling!

I'm not ashamed to admit that I totally spaced out on realizing that to mount this properly I needed tighter spacing between my intermediate attachments (more hardware) and I also was going to be adding more rings to keep the net tight enough to prevent sparrows and small birds which the 3/4" net was meant for.

So my tip is if you are just getting into this or maybe just starting to do some smaller mesh nets, consult your suppliers! No matter who you use, they have folks on staff or ask on this forum to the many folks who are decades into this work. It can and will save you time/money overall and that helps when you are just getting rolling along.

I learn new ways daily to save time/money or be better or more efficient with my installs of bird exclusion. Always room for improvement and I appreciate all those who share on here and .info and in publications as well for sharing!

Justin

Ditto; if the installation spec's call for attachments every 12 inches...do it every 12 inches!
